Box Office: ‘Sinners’ Beats ‘Minecraft’ With Good Friday Haul of $19.2M

Over the Easter weekend, Ryan Googler’s long-awaited film titled Sinners, featuring Michael B. Jordan, has been garnering favorable responses and earning a solid income at the box office. Similarly, Warner Bros.’ latest release is experiencing similar success.

The highly popular and well-received movie took the number one spot on Friday’s box office chart, earning $19.2 million across 3,308 theaters, including Imax screens. This placed the supernatural period vampire film ahead of Warner Bros.’ release A Minecraft Movie, although it is anticipated that A Minecraft Movie will surpass Sinners at some point on Saturday.

Over the weekend, I’m anticipating that Minecraft will maintain its reign at the top of the gaming charts for a third straight week, raking in an estimated $45 million from over 4,000 locations across the globe. As we get closer to the $350 million mark domestically, it’s also edging towards breaking the $700 million barrier globally – talk about a game that just keeps on giving!

The term “Sinners” is projected to earn between $40 million and $42 million, which represents a robust opening for a film in the R-rated genre. By adding international earnings from its early release, its worldwide total as of Friday exceeded $26 million.

The focus is on how well Ryan Coogler’s movie Sinners does, as it was produced by Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy from Warner Bros. throughout the entire process. If Sinners maintains its strong performance, the duo could now claim two consecutive successes following a series of high-profile flops that allegedly led their boss, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, to contemplate replacing them.

The film “Sinners” comes with numerous benefits when it hits theaters. It holds the highest Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score of Coogler’s career, at 97%, and has received an impressive A rating from moviegoers, as well as perfect scores on PostTrak. This action-packed drama is resonating particularly well with a diverse crowd, with Black audiences accounting for almost half of all ticket sales thus far. White audiences make up 27%, followed by Latinos (14%), Asians (6%), and Native American/Other groups (4%), as per PostTrak data.

As a gamer, stepping into the shoes of protagonist Jordan, I find myself immersed in the 1932-set game titled “Sinners.” In this gripping narrative, I portray identical twin entrepreneurs, Smoke and Stack, who have returned home to Clarksdale, Mississippi Delta, after seven tumultuous years. Our journey has seen us survive the brutal trenches of World War I and the treacherous Chicago gangland. Now, we’re back with a truckful of liquor and ambitious plans to open a juke joint. However, our homecoming is not what we anticipated, as we’re confronted by horrors that lay hidden in our once familiar town.

David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter’s review states that ‘Sinners’ is the director’s initial feature film, entirely original and not based on real events or previously owned intellectual property, and he skillfully incorporates multiple themes and genre elements that could potentially sustain at least three separate movies.”

Or more casually:

“According to David Rooney in his review for The Hollywood Reporter, ‘Sinners’ is the director’s first original movie, not adapted from real life or an existing franchise, and it’s got so many layers of themes and genre twists that you could make three movies out of it.

Coogler made a big impact with the independent film success “Fruitvale Station“, followed by directing “Creed” and the “Black Panther” series (both featuring Jordan as the star). The production cost of “Sinners” was approximately $90 million, including marketing expenses, which is quite a substantial budget for a film in this genre. By contrast, the budget for “Creed” was only $50 million.

In other locations, Angel Studios’ Easter-themed movie titled “The King of Kings” sits comfortably in third position. This animated film depicting the life of Jesus is projected to bring in around $17 million to $18 million during its second weekend, representing a minimal decrease of approximately 12%. With an additional 335 theaters, the movie is now being screened in a total of 3,535 locations. It has received a highly desired A+ CinemaScore and is performing exceptionally well in middle America and the southern regions.

The Disney and 20th Century production starring Rami Malek in the spy drama titled “The Amateur” is maintaining its position in fourth place. It’s anticipated that the movie will earn between $7 million and $8 million during its second weekend, playing at approximately 3,400 theaters.

Over the Easter weekend, the intense U.S. Navy Seal drama from A24 titled “Warfare” is projected to bring in between $4.8 million and $5 million at approximately 2,670 locations. In recognition of military service members, A24 has decided to reduce ticket prices for them as a gesture of honor. The film, depicting the Iraqi war, was jointly directed by Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, who is a former SEAL.

This is a developing story.
