As a longtime fan of Richard Pryor and John Candy, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming BET+ Original, ‘Brewster’s Millions: Christmas’. It’s heartwarming to see the legacy of these comedic icons live on through their children, with Richard Pryor Jr. stepping into the shoes of his father’s character, Monty Brewster, and Rain Pryor joining the cast as Opal. The fact that they found it an honor to work on this project is a testament to the enduring charm and appeal of the original film.
It’s the time of year where one could potentially become extremely wealthy, if Brewster manages to spend all that money he has. The long-awaited sequel to the underappreciated comedy classic “Brewster’s Millions,” starring the late Richard Pryor and John Candy, has finally finished production. The sequel, titled “Brewster’s Millions: Christmas,” will be released just before the holiday season on December 5. Not only is it a BET+ Original, but it’s also a family affair, with Rain Pryor, Richard Pryor Jr., both real-life children of Richard Pryor, starring in it.
Stepping into my role as a film critic, I must say that while Richard Pryor Jr.’s part might not be substantial in the latest adaptation of “Brewster’s Millions,” it’s fascinating to see the comedian’s son reprise the iconic character Monty Brewster, a role originally played by his father in the 1985 film. As Richard Pryor Jr. himself put it (via Deadline), this is an exciting opportunity for him to follow in his father’s footsteps, with the original movie having graced our screens close to four decades ago.
Being Richard Pryor’s son, I felt incredibly honored and delighted to temporarily take on the role of the iconic character Montgomery “Monty” Brewster. Working alongside Joseph Nasser and Matthew Nasser was nothing short of a privilege.
In the holiday movie, Richard Pryor’s daughter, Rain, embodies the role of Opal. Moreover, she felt privileged to contribute to the BET+ Original production as well. To add to that, Rain mentioned her appreciation for the opportunity.
Working on Brewster’s Millions at Christmas time has been a privilege for me. The whole team, including Director Patricia Cuffie-Jones, Producers Joseph and Matthew Nasser, made the experience feel like working with family. I could sense my dad’s presence watching over us from above.

Brewster’s Millions at Christmas
Patricia Cuffie-Jones is both the director and scriptwriter for the movie “Brewster’s Millions: Christmas“, which is a follow-up to one of Richard Pryor and John Candy’s less recognized films, produced 40 years later. It’s important to mention that the basis for the original version of “Brewster’s Millions” (1985) dates back nearly 125 years, with its source material being George Barr McCutcheon’s 1902 novel of the same name.
Unfortunately, Pryor’s depiction of a minor-league baseball player from Hackensack who turns into a multi-millionaire didn’t receive much favor from either fans or critics in the movie Brewster’s Millions. This film currently has a 38% rating on the Tomatometer and an audience score of 56% on Rotten Tomatoes, despite earning $45.8 million at the box office (according to Box Office Mojo).
As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that BET+’s delightful sequel, “Brewster’s Millions: Christmas“, is set to hit the screens on Thursday, December 5. For those who haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing the original masterpiece, here’s a glimpse into the heart of its compelling inheritance scene from the very beginning of “Brewster’s Millions“. Enjoy!
