This year, the opening act at the Edinburgh International Festival is set to be the first public performance of a freshly satirical play concerning the 2008 financial crisis, featuring the talents of Brian Cox.
Under the guidance of director Andrew Panton, who has previously worked on productions like “Osage County,” “The Children,” and “A Christmas Carol,” James Graham’s play titled “Make It Happen” will bring back actor Cox to the Scottish stage after a decade. This marks his first appearance on the Scottish stage since a ten-year absence, as he stars in this production. Cox is well-known for his role in “Succession.
As a gamer, I’m thrilled to share that starting August 1st through the 9th, the epicenter of art will be Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre, where Make It Happen will kick off the city’s annual arts festival!
The play, located in Edinburgh, presents Cox as Adam Smith, the groundbreaking Scottish philosopher and economist, along with the spirit of financial history. Graham’s script delves into the “uncontrolled expansion, escalating greed, and nerve-wracking arrogance” that led to the global economy’s collapse, according to a plot summary.
Cox expressed his enthusiasm for starring in a play penned by the talented James Graham. It’s been quite some time since he last performed in Scotland, and he’s delighted to return to the land of his theatrical beginnings.
Graham expressed: “Much like other writers, an Edinburgh stage was where I first had the courage to present a complete play to an audience. Being invited to be part of the esteemed Edinburgh International Festival program this summer is both an honor and an exhilaration. Additionally, collaborating with the National Theatre of Scotland, Dundee Rep, and undoubtedly – Brian Cox, who I’ve longed to write for as far back as I can recall.
As a gamer, I find myself immersed in a world that’s still echoing the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis. We’re yet to fully shake off its impact and the divisive legacy it left behind. It feels natural for us artists to delve into this topic. However, our exploration will be far from somber. Instead, expect a vibrant spectacle filled with music, captivating narratives, characters larger than life, a dash of humor that’s cheeky yet endearing, and even some spectral figures hailing from Scotland’s long-forgotten past.
Nicola Benedetti, the director of the Edinburgh International Festival, commented: “This year’s theme, ‘The Truth We Seek,’ is brilliantly embodied by ‘Make it Happen.’ The Edinburgh International Festival is renowned for its high level of ambition and thought-provoking work. We eagerly look forward to welcoming you as we bring this to life.
