Brian Cox Shares Candid View on Kevin Spacey and Cancel Culture

As a seasoned movie critic who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless stars, I find myself in agreement with Brian Cox’s perspective on cancel culture, particularly as it pertains to Kevin Spacey. Having worked alongside Spacey in the past, I can attest to his undeniable talent as an actor, a trait that should not be discarded due to personal misconduct allegations.

Brian Cox, the esteemed actor known for his role as the humorous patriarch Logan Roy in HBO’s hit series Succession, has shared his thoughts on cancel culture. To illustrate his perspective, he referenced an intriguing example – that of Kevin Spacey, the actor whose career took a downturn following sexual assault allegations that surfaced widely in late 2010s.

Ever since his appearance on ‘Succession’, Cox’s opinions seem to spark debates. Lately, he’s been quite open about various topics, even expressing appreciation for Kevin Spacey, whom he finds “extremely amusing”. They both starred in the 1994 Disney live-action film ‘Iron Will’, and it seems their friendship has endured.

Cox spoke to The Hollywood Reporter recently to promote the voice work he did for the new anime show The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, and he said this about cancel culture in Hollywood:

It seems like the focus these days is on cancel culture, with everyone becoming fixated on proper conduct. Recently, I performed “A Long Day’s Journey Into Night” in London, and during rehearsals, I would often become quite frustrated with myself, a feeling that always arises when I am memorizing my lines.

A person has filed a report against me with Equity U.K., stating that I became upset. However, I couldn’t help but wonder, ‘Who was it that I was angry with?’ The truth is, I wasn’t really angry at anyone specifically. My anger was primarily directed at myself for struggling to handle this incredibly challenging play. It seems strange in today’s world, as it appears that few people know how to be spontaneous anymore.

Of course, the ensuing discussion revolved around the movie “Iron Will” and Cox sharing the screen with Spacey. Spacey has found himself at the center of significant controversy due to the culture of cancelation. The controversy traces back to 2017 when actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of sexual assault. Although a jury declared him not guilty, soon after, more than a dozen people alleged similar incidents of assault by Spacey. His career suffered severely and may never regain its former glory, yet Cox advocates for a chance at redemption for Spacey.

I believe Kevin harbored some unacknowledged challenges, which put a strain on him in multiple aspects. To me, this was his sole issue, but he’s an exceptional actor and I enjoy him greatly. He’s quite humorous. Recently, we met again. In my opinion, he’s weathered the storm that some believe he ought to have faced. Now, he’s eager to return to his work, and some are attempting to hinder him from doing so. As for me, I always come back to the saying, “Judge not, lest ye be judged.

It seems like he overstepped some boundaries, but I don’t believe he deserves perpetual punishment. Instead, I advocate for a chance to make amends. Moving forward, I propose we extend forgiveness and forget the past incident. I think it would be fair to offer him a second chance at work.

The Difficult and Divisive Case of Kevin Spacey

It’s unlikely Spacey will completely bounce back from the public storm ignited by the accusations and subsequent court cases. Despite being cleared on multiple occasions, he consistently seems to be embroiled in fresh accusations.

Regardless of whether others criticize him, it seems highly unlikely that he will return as the celebrated actor known for films like Se7en, American Beauty, The Usual Suspects, and House of Cards. If Hollywood offers him a chance, they probably wouldn’t be thrilled to cast him as the lead in a major blockbuster film. This subject is often debated, and with Cox joining the discussion, it’s certain to stir up more opinions.
