As a long-time fan of heartwarming holiday films and a connoisseur of animated masterpieces, I must say that I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming Netflix release, “That Christmas.” The prospect of Brian Cox donning the iconic Santa Claus suit is already enough to make this season bright, but when you add Richard Curtis’s enchanting storytelling and Simon Otto’s directorial debut, it becomes a veritable Christmas miracle!
In the debut trailer for Netflix’s humorous animated Christmas special titled “That Holiday Season“, Brian Cox lends his voice as Santa Claus.
In the initial preview for the movie, the actor from Succession can be seen dressed in traditional Santa Claus attire – a full beard, a red suit adorned with white fur around the edges and boots, as he disperses gifts to children on the most bustling night of the year, which is Christmas Eve.
This Christmas movie is inspired by a series of beloved children’s books and directed by the acclaimed author-director Richard Curtis (known for “Four Weddings and a Funeral”, “Notting Hill”, “Love Actually” and “Yesterday”). It represents his first venture into animation. The plot interweaves tales about family, friends, love, loneliness, and an unusual Santa Claus blunder.
In her critique, Lovia Gyarkye from The Hollywood Reporter commended the “endearing animation” and noted that the film subtly steers clear of typical sentimentalism by anchoring its fantastical tale in the authentic and complex feelings experienced in everyday life.
The film directed by Simon Otto, known for his work on “Love, Death & Robots” and the “How to Train Your Dragon” series, will premiere on Netflix on December 4. Notably, this is Otto’s first full-length directorial project.
Ever since I was young, being an animator has been at the top of my holiday wish list, especially since watching animated films was such a beloved family Christmas custom. I never thought this dream would become reality, but here I am, with the opportunity to helm a Christmas movie penned by none other than Richard Curtis, and working alongside some of the most legendary voice actors,” Otto expressed. “Seeing these talented individuals breathe life into these heartwarmingly hilarious stories, and witnessing the enchantment that animation brings to them, is nothing short of incredible. I hope That Christmas will become a treasured holiday tradition for audiences everywhere.
Apart from the actor from the series Succession, completing the ensemble are Fiona Shaw, Jodie Whittaker, Lolly Adefope, Alex Macqueen, Katherine Parkinson, Sindhu Vee, India Brown, Zazie Hayhurst, Sienna Sayer, Jack Wisniewski, Rosie Cavaliero, Paul Kaye, Guz Khan, Andy Nyman, Kuhu Agarwal, Bronte Smith, Freddie Spry and Ava Talbot. They are joined by Bill Nighy and Rhys Darby in the cast.
Nicole P. Hearon (known for ‘Moana’ and ‘Frozen’) and Adam Tandy (‘The Thick of It’, ‘Detectorists’) are the main producers. Mary Coleman, Natalie Fischer, Julie Lockhart, Elisabeth Murdoch, Bonnie Arnold, Lara Breay, Sarah Smith, Rebecca Cobb, Colin Hopkins and Curtis will serve as executive producers.
