Brian Cox’s Shocking Performance in ‘The Parenting’ Leaves Fans Stunned

Craig Johnson, renowned for his work outside the horror genre with an eerie title (“The Skeleton Twins”), has now ventured into horror filmmaking under a seemingly ordinary title – “The Parenting“. Despite this, it remains a comedy, boasting a stellar comedic ensemble including Lisa Kudrow, Parker Posey, Edie Falco, Nik Dodani, and Vivian Bang. Interestingly, Brian Cox, not typically associated with comedy, emerges as the film’s most eccentric and absurdly comic element. Fans of “Succession” may recognize him best as the formidable Logan Roy.

Johnson shared with MovieWeb that you’ll find Brian, who is quite different from Logan Roy, doing things he never would have done. He added, “I can confidently say that you’ll be surprised and impressed by the words – both literally and metaphorically – that come from Brian in ‘The Parenting’.

A significant portion of what Cox speaks is spontaneous, but a large part is penned by Kent Sublette, a seasoned writer from Saturday Night Live. His current project, however, is a movie that manages to be both comical and intertwined with horror elements – a surprising blend, indeed. It carries all the classic elements of a haunted house thriller, along with the tense and potentially amusing experience of introducing your parents and your partner’s parents for the first time.

Sublette shared with us that he’s never ventured into writing horror movies before, yet he’s an avid enthusiast of the genre. With his extensive background in comedy, he wanted to create a unique blend by depicting authentic characters and actors reacting to truly frightening situations. This was always his objective.

“Surrounded by Super Funny People”

Before crafting the outrageous horror-comedy script for “The Parenting”, Sublette had spent the last 20 years collaborating with some comedy legends who graced the stage on Saturday Night Live, and he continues to thrive in this field. During our chat, he took a moment to reminisce about his work on the award-winning sketch show and reveal some of his favorite sketches that he played a part in creating.

Sublette shared with us that he’s been here for some time and has been fortunate enough to collaborate with numerous extraordinary individuals. Notably, he often writes content intended for women. He penned numerous pieces for Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon. As a matter of fact, we recently worked together on the 50th anniversary special, but you might remember that Kristen, James Anderson, and I co-wrote ‘Baby Hands’, which was quite entertaining. Additionally, I collaborated with Melissa McCarthy, Colin Jost, and Rob Klein to write ‘Sean Spicer’. I find myself in the fortunate position of being surrounded by an abundance of incredibly humorous individuals, it seems, throughout my life.

Starting from today, March 13, 2025, the series titled “The Parenting” will be available for streaming on Max. Here’s a link where you can tune in and enjoy: [Link]
