As a long-time aficionado of cinematic chills and thrills, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming year in horror. With Maika Monroe leading the charge yet again, 2025 is shaping up to be a veritable feast for those of us who crave the supernatural and the macabre.
2024 proved to be a stellar year for vampire movies, boasting blockbusters like “Abigail”, “Salem’s Lot”, and the upcoming “Nosferatu”. It looks like the excitement will carry over into 2025 as well, given that “Neon” has recently acquired the rights to the Dracula-inspired film “Brides“, starring a well-known and beloved figure in the horror genre: Maika Monroe.
According to reports, by the deadline, Monroe will spearhead the film “Brides,” a production rumored to have loose ties with Bram Stoker’s classic 1887 novel. Helmed by Chloe Okuno, filming is slated to commence in March, marking the second collaboration between the two, following their successful partnership on the underestimated 2022 psychological thriller, “Watcher,” where Monroe also held the leading role. Given the plot summary, it appears this production promises an entertaining experience when it reaches theaters, as it reimagines Stoker’s story in a contemporary light.
In the 1960s, Sally Bishop (played by Maika Monroe) and her husband visit a secluded villa in Italy following Sally’s mental breakdown. The villa’s owner, a count with a mysterious demeanor, seems intrigued by Sally. However, things take an unexpected turn when the count encounters more than he bargained for as Sally’s feminist spirit stirs up chaos in his seemingly idyllic, yet violent domain filled with vampire brides.
Currently, the year 2025 isn’t boasting much in terms of vampire-themed movies, with only a handful of noteworthy productions. Besides the film “Brides“, the only other title worth mentioning is “Ryan Coogler’s Sinners”, set for release in March. This historical drama features Hailee Steinfeld and Michael B. Jordan as a duo of twin brothers, who are trying to leave their past behind. However, upon their return home, they uncover an immense evil waiting to greet them.
Maika Monroe Is Busier Than Ever
Known for her work in the horror genre, Monroe initially gained recognition due to her part in the surprise hit film “It Follows” (2014), which garnered over $23 million at the box office while having a production budget of slightly more than $1 million. Subsequently, she didn’t limit herself to the horror genre and swiftly ventured into drama and comedy movies, featuring in productions such as “Hot Summer Nights”, “After Everything”, and “Greta”.
In earlier 2023, Longlegs witnessed Monroe’s impressive comeback to straight-forward horror cinema. Her role as Agent Lee Harker alongside Nicolas Cage’s portrayal of the notorious Satanic killer was nothing short of sensational. This film turned out to be the highest-earning independent movie of the year, grossing $127 million, and also received acclaim from both critics and audiences, with some describing it as a “chilling fusion of artistic brilliance and apprehension.
Next year, Monroe will delve deeper into the world of magic with the period fantasy film titled “100 Nights of Hero“, and surprisingly, she’ll embody the antagonist in the remake of “The Hand that Rocks the Cradle“. In this reboot, Monroe will portray a sinister nanny who haunts a family. Clearly, Monroe’s workload is heavier than ever since the acclaimed success of “Longlegs“, which undeniably benefits not only her career, but also thrills us spectators whenever she graces our screens.
