As a seasoned gamer of historical dramas and a fervent fan of diversity in storytelling, I am absolutely thrilled about Yerin Ha’s casting as Sophie Beckett in Bridgerton Season 4! The series has always been a trailblazer in representing people of color and mixed-race couples in the Regency Era, and Ha’s casting marks a significant milestone by giving us our first Korean lead.
In a new development for “Bridgerton,” the upcoming pairing is set to unfold. Following Netflix’s earlier announcement that Benedict Bridgerton’s love story, based on Julia Quinn’s “An Offer From A Gentleman, will headline Season 4, it appears they’ve found their Sophie Beckett for the series.
Australian-Korean actor Yerin Ha, who starred in the hit Paramount+ show “Halo,” has been chosen to play the main character in the upcoming season. This is significant because the show has always featured people of color in leading roles and depicted mixed-race couples during its Regency Era. With Ha’s casting, the series will have its first Korean lead! (Variety reports this.)
In the realm of the science fiction series produced by Steven Spielberg, she played a pivotal role as Kwan Ha from 2022 to 2024.
In the report, neither Netflix nor Shondaland’s representatives have spoken about the casting, indicating that the actress may still be in negotiations for Bridgerton Season 4 and hasn’t officially agreed to the role yet. Alternatively, it could mean that the creators prefer to make a big impact by having Ha make her entrance on set only when she’s ready.
In Julia Quinn’s novels, the love story between Benedict Bridgerton and his eventual partner is loosely based on the tale of Cinderella. This is evident in “An Offer From A Gentleman.” Sophie Beckett, born from an affair between the Earl of Penwood and his maid, was raised by her grandmother. As she grew older, she became a maid in her father’s household with his new wife. During the social events known as the ‘season,’ Sophie chooses to secretly attend the Bridgerton Masquerade Ball, where she encounters Benedict Bridgerton naturally.
In the final episode of Season 3, the upcoming plotline was hinted at when Benedict and Eloise talked about a masquerade ball. Interestingly, Benedict joked during the scene that he’d be “keeping out of sight behind a mask, steering clear of eligible ladies as if they were the black plague.”
In the book, the character Sophie Beckett is depicted with dark blonde hair and green eyes. However, similar to past decisions made in the series, the selection of Yerin Ha for the role could mark another significant milestone by presenting the first Korean lead in the franchise’s history.
