British Shows, Including Baby Reindeer and The Gentlemen, Are Among Netflix's Most Streamed

As a movie critic who has spent years immersed in the rich tapestry of global cinema, I must admit that the current reign of British productions on Netflix is nothing short of remarkable. The success of shows like “Bridgerton,” “The Gentlemen,” and the extraordinary “Baby Reindeer” has truly solidified the UK’s status as a powerhouse in the television industry.

In the realm of streaming, it is the British who hold the reins at Netflix, as evidenced by the streaming charts. As stated by Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos (via Deadline), an impressive four of Netflix’s most-watched series for the first half of the year were all British productions. The episodes of Netflix’s popular British shows like “Fool Me Once”, “Bridgerton”, and “The Gentlemen” garnered a collective total of 360 million views from January to June 2024. These viewership numbers, along with those of Netflix’s other top-watched series for the first half of the year, will be revealed by Netflix later this week.

At the Royal Television Society London Convention, Sarando discussed various figures and acknowledged the UK as a top-tier nation for television and cinema, stating it as “one of the finest countries worldwide in terms of TV and film.” Despite trailing behind the BBC in the local market, Sarandos remained positive about capturing a 25% market share by prioritizing viewers’ preferences. As per an August report from Deadline, there was a surge of interest among Americans in British shows streamed on Netflix and Amazon Prime, with the US movie industry grappling with the aftermath of Hollywood strikes.

During a declaration about it, Baby Reindeer’s creator, writer, executive producer, and actor, Richard Gadd, agreed to a multiple-year first-look contract with the streaming service for the production of scripted series. (Or) The announcement mentioned that the creator, writer, executive producer, and star of Baby Reindeer, Richard Gadd, had inked a multi-year first-look deal with the streaming platform for the creation of scripted series.

Baby Reindeer’s Big Emmy Wins

Among the popular shows like “The Gentlemen,” “Bridgerton,” and “Fool Me Once,” which all boast impressive viewership numbers, one title has particularly stood out due to its combination of audience and critical acclaim. Released rather modestly on a streaming platform in April, “Gadd’s Baby Reindeer” has not only garnered millions of views on Netflix but also received widespread recognition. This black comedy, inspired by the life experiences and challenges faced by Gadd regarding identity, abuse, and a stalker, has been highly praised (with a near-perfect 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), and it bagged an impressive four major Emmy Awards during the recent awards ceremony.

In this year’s Emmy Awards, a young Reindeer was honored with the prestigious Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series or Movie trophy. On the acting front, Eric Gadd bagged two awards – Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, and Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series or Movie. Jessica Gunning, meanwhile, took home the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie award for her exceptional role as Martha. The series also garnered victories in Casting and Picture Editing categories.

Instead of their second seasons, Baby Reindeer and Fool Me Once are taking a break, but Bridgerton and Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen will continue their narratives in upcoming seasons. We found out just yesterday that the fourth season of Bridgerton started filming officially. The Gentlemen was renewed for another season in August, although production isn’t expected to start until next year. So, fans will have to be patient before they can follow the next chapters of these shows. However, Netflix offers a variety of British productions to keep viewers entertained, such as After Life starring Ricky Gervais, the political thriller Black Earth Rising featuring the talented Michaela Coel, and the anthology series Black Mirror.

In October, Netflix is set to bring back yet another beloved and highly praised British show, “Heartstopper”. This coming-of-age series will make its appearance on Netflix starting from the 3rd of October.
