Good Night, and Good Luck keeps climbing the box office charts, surpassing previous records and its own earnings from the last week as the top-grossing play.
Last week’s performance of the play featuring George Clooney earned approximately $3.84 million, with an additional $60,000 in ticket sales compared to the previous week. The average ticket price was around $315 and the show was a sellout, playing well beyond its full capacity at the Winter Garden Theatre.
Last week, the play Othello, featuring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, once again held the highest box office price of $374.17 in the industry. The production generated a revenue of $3.1 million and was completely sold out at the Barrymore Theatre, with no seats left unfilled.
The two shows led the way in box office earnings within the industry, with Wicked coming in third place at approximately $2.58 million, The Lion King following closely behind at around $2.32 million, and Glengarry Glen Ross earning about $2.3 million.
Last week, Sunset Blvd performed only seven shows instead of the usual eight at the St. James Theatre due to a sound issue. As a result, its weekly earnings dropped to $995,812.70. Despite the Wednesday matinee being canceled, the show’s lead actress, Nicole Scherzinger, serenaded the audience through a bullhorn before they left. On Friday, the bullhorn used in this unusual performance was auctioned off, raising $7,000 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
In summary, the overall industry performance decreased by nearly 8% compared to the previous week. This was due to several shows having heavily discounted press performances and opening nights in anticipation of the Tony Awards eligibility deadline.
By April 27th, all Broadway shows that could potentially be nominated for the 2024-2025 Tony Awards had already premiered. Last week witnessed a flurry of activity, as six productions made their debuts: Floyd Collins, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, Just In Time, Dead Outlaw and Real Women Have Curves: The Musical.
The Tony Awards nominations will be revealed on May 1 by Sarah Paulson and Wendell Pierce, while the actual awards event is scheduled for June 8 at Radio City Music Hall.
All in all, we’re currently 20% ahead of where we were at this time last year, as the season concludes on May 25th.
