Broadway Box Office: ‘Sunset Blvd.,’ ‘Purpose,’ ‘Oh Mary’ See Big Tonys Boosts

The Tony Awards effect has hit Broadway grosses.

Last week, Sunset Boulevard experienced a significant increase in earnings following the Tonys, boosting its box office revenue to over $1.7 million, which was more than $400,000 higher than the previous week’s total.

Nicole Scherzinger, the leading lady, received a Tony Award for her act at the June 8 event, and she was additionally featured during the broadcast. Notably, the show itself was awarded as the best revival of a musical. The average ticket price for Sunset Blvd rose to $138 from $110 in the previous week, and its capacity expanded to 92% from 89%.

As a dedicated theatergoer, I’m thrilled to share that the captivating play, “Purpose,” recently added an impressive $100,000 to its earnings, reaching a staggering $636,381 last week. This is the highest gross it has achieved during its entire run! The play debuted on March 17 at the Hayes Theater and has consistently maintained a full house since then. What an incredible journey it’s been!

Hey there! I couldn’t believe it when I didn’t win the award for best play, but we sure made a splash taking home trophies for our lead, Cole Escola, and director Sam Pinkleton. Our earnings skyrocketed an impressive $152,000 last week, bringing us to a grand total of $1.35 million! This is the twelfth time we’ve smashed the house record at the Lyceum Theater. To top it off, our average ticket price hit an all-time high of $189 during this run – now that’s something to be proud of as a gamer in the world of theater!

It’s possible that “Happy Ending” was the major victor at the recent Tony Awards, scooping up five awards in total, including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book, and Best Leading Actor in a Musical for its star Darren Criss. Additionally, the musical achieved its highest earning week last week, amassing $1.2 million, with an approximately $77,000 boost from the previous week.

Contrarily, the musical “Real Women Have Curves” announced on Tuesday that it would be closing on June 29th. Despite being featured in the Tonys telecast and receiving nominations for Best Score and Featured Actress in a Musical, it failed to win any awards. Prior to the ceremony, the production had been struggling with low attendance and box office earnings at the James Earl Jones Theatre. Last week, the musical experienced its lowest attendance rate of the run, approximately 63%, and saw a drop of $50,000 in grosses from the previous week, leaving it with $365,252.

On June 8, both “Othello,” featuring Jake Gyllenhaal and Denzel Washington, and “Good Night and Good Luck,” with George Clooney, concluded their runs. The closing of these two popular productions led to a 14% decrease in the overall box office earnings last week compared to the previous one.

With those two not in the running, “Wicked” regained dominance in box office earnings, making $2.34 million. Close behind was “Glengarry Glen Ross” with $2.27 million, followed by “The Lion King” earning $2.09 million, “Hamilton” bringing in $2.06 million, and then “Sunset Blvd.”

When the two competitors were out of the picture, “Wicked” once again led the pack in ticket sales with $2.34 million, closely followed by “Glengarry Glen Ross” with $2.27 million, “The Lion King” with $2.09 million, “Hamilton” with $2.06 million, and lastly, “Sunset Blvd.”
