Brooklyn Museum Celebrates 200 Years with Emphatic Group Exhibition

As I peruse this impressive list of artists, I can’t help but feel humbled and inspired by their diverse backgrounds and talents. Each name tells a story of a unique journey, filled with passion, resilience, and creativity that led them to where they are today.

To mark its 200th anniversary, the Brooklyn Museum is showcasing a variety of creative innovators from its namesake borough in a fresh group exhibition, curated by Vik Muniz, Mickalene Thomas, Fred Tomasell, and Jeffrey Gibson. Notably, Jeffrey Gibson, who hails from Brooklyn, is currently presenting a groundbreaking exhibition at the Venice Biennale that questions the roots of American mythology using vibrant sculptures, installations, and films. His work draws inspiration from his heritage as a Mississippi Choctaw-Cherokee.

“Brooklyn Showcases Artwork by 200+ Notable and Rising Talents

Sharon Matt Atkins, the museum’s deputy director, stated, “For decades, our institution has stood behind Brooklyn’s artists. This upcoming exhibition is an extension of that long-standing commitment. We are thrilled to keep this tradition alive with The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition, where we will celebrate the rich artistic variety of the borough and pay tribute to the creative minds that contribute to Brooklyn’s thriving cultural scene.

The show is set to debut on October 4, 2024, and continue until January 26, 2025. A comprehensive roster of the involved artists can be found further down.
