Bros Are Totally Oblivious to Gilead in SNL’s Genius Handmaid’s Tale Parody

Some people should really pay more attention to the news.

Approximately two weeks following the debut of the reimagined series of “The Handmaid’s Tale” in 2017, an episode on “Saturday Night Live” was broadcast, starring Host Chris Pine. The scene mirrored the original in every aspect, including the white bonnets, character names, and the complete annihilation of women’s rights to self-determination over their bodies. This parallelism persisted until a group of handmaids (Sasheer Zamata, Aidy Bryant, Cecily Strong, and Vanessa Bayer) crossed paths with a pair of oblivious guys (Pine and Mikey Day), who had been absent from recent events.

“Girl squad, man! What the frick is up?” Day’s character says.

“You guys missed my Cinco de Mayo half birthday!” says Pine. “What’d you do, flake, or what?”

In the state of Gilead, these women are making an effort to clarify that they now reside under a republican system where the government has seized control over their finances, employment, and children. As a consequence, they are considered the possessions of men.

Ah, it seems I might have stumbled upon that topic before, but my schedule has been jam-packed with work recently. However, don’t worry, my old man’s a lawyer – he might be able to lend a hand. While his expertise is primarily in entertainment law, I bet he knows some top-notch professionals we could reach out to.

“We can’t,” says Zamata’s handmaiden, which prompts a defensive “OK, sorry for helping!” from Pine.

SNL’s “Handmaid’s Tale” starred the women of the Season 42 cast

When one of the women calls Bryant by the name “Ofdaniel,” her male friend gets puzzled since his real name is Ash. However, when she clarifies that she means he belongs to Daniel now, he becomes worried.

“Daniel? Oh no, that guy is like super conservative now,” he says. “You should leave him.”

When Ofdaniel explains she can’t, she’s rebuffed with a “Yes you can!”

Later, Alex Moffat arrives looking puzzled, recalling that there had been a demonstration concerning this matter involving the women.

“Oh yeah, I meant to go to that,” he says after learning it was “several years ago.”

Kyle Mooney then enters, wielding a big gun.

Hey girl squad! Long time no see, Ash, where have you been? I wish you could’ve joined us for pizza in the park. However, there’s something strange I need to ask of you – I need to take you to a government prison for some reason, maybe to interrogate or torment you, but don’t worry, it won’t be forever! After that, we have plans to play a round of drunken mini-golf. You should join us!

As they are being taken away for their punishment after talking to men, Pine mockingly comments to the handmaids, “I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t show up at all.

Safe to say they probably didn’t.

SNL parodied The Handmaid’s Tale again with Amy Schumer

In 2018, Amy Schumer took the hosting role and appeared alongside Strong, Bryant, and Kate McKinnon in “Handmaids in the City.” This production presented a unique twist where Amy’s character (Offred, originally played by Elisabeth Moss) was reimagined as Carrie Bradshaw from a dystopian perspective, in a teaser for the latest, trendiest, and most relevant TV show.

In the midst of being shocked by the electric jolts, Offred expressed her surprise at the restricted rights she found herself dealing with in this strange new realm, but also marveled at how striking she appeared in red attire. This remark came after she was disciplined for telling an offensive and shocking joke about a threesome.
