As a movie reviewer with a penchant for all things Bruce Campbell and a soft spot for action-packed dramas, I must say that the prospect of a Burn Notice revival has me more excited than a Deadite on a sugar high!
Known for his humorous portrayals in horror films like “The Evil Dead” franchise, “Bubba Ho-Tep,” and the 2021 movie “Black Friday,” Bruce Campbell has also made a name for himself outside the genre, particularly in the popular crime series “Burn Notice.” In an interview with ComicBook, Campbell expressed his desire to revive this series after over a decade.
The television show titled “Burn Notice” is an action-packed spy drama that premiered in 2007. It features Jeffrey Donovan portraying the character Michael Westen, a former spy who gets dismissed from his agency and effectively cut off from regular life, with all his assets frozen and constant monitoring. To make ends meet, Westen works as a freelance private investigator while based in Miami. He spends much of the series trying to uncover the reason for his dismissal and the identity of those responsible. On the show, Eric Christian Olsen plays Sam Axe, a retired Navy SEAL and Westen’s best friend who assists him with various cases.
Given that numerous series from the late 2000s have been revived lately, Campbell strongly believes it’s high time for Westen and Axe to team up once more for a new installment of their crime-solving escapades. In his words:
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but express my enthusiasm when I say, “It’s high time we resurrected the gripping series, Burn Notice! The globe is teeming with unsavory characters, criminals who leave their mark on every corner of the world. Fortunately, none of our talented cast members have bitten the dust, either in reality or through their characters. Therefore, a two-hour feature film seems like an enticing proposition. I’m doing my best to champion this idea. Just as Monk made a comeback with a brief two-hour movie, I believe fans are eager for a taste of Burn Notice once more. So, buckle up and get ready for a tantalizing glimpse into the world of Burn Notice!”
Burn Notice Rivaled Ash vs. Evil Dead as Bruce Campbellās Most Popular Show
Throughout its seven seasons, the TV show “Burn Notice” consistently topped ratings. The Season 7 finale in 2013 attracted the highest number of viewers. To fans, the quality of “Burn Notice” was comparable to Bruce Campbell’s subsequent TV spin-offs from “The Evil Dead,” namely “Ash vs Evil Dead.” Both shows enjoyed a high approval rating, with a 95% positive response on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter.
It’s challenging to predict which of Campbell’s shows would garner the most attention if they were to return, as both “Burn Notice” and “Evil Dead” series have their own unique appeal. While “Burn Notice” consistently drew a large viewership and wrapped up neatly with its final episode, the “Evil Dead” series mirrors Sam Raimi’s original movie trilogy in that it ended at a point where viewers were eager to see more of what was yet to unfold.
Currently, there’s no scheduled return for either show. Despite Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Campbell) not being interested in reprising his role as live-action Ash Williams again, he appears to be actively pursuing a revival of Burn Notice. Having previously starred in the spin-off prequel film The Fall of Sam Axe in 2011, it remains to be seen if his calls for another movie sequel will get any attention.
