'Buggy’ Fallout: London gets baptism of fire from critics

As a long-time Fallout fan and avid gamer, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of Fallout: London for years. The prospect of exploring a new part of the Fallout world created by Team FOLON, with the involvement of two Doctor Whos no less, was beyond exciting.

There have been problems with Fallout 4’s long-awaited expansion, Fallout: London, in the UK. Despite being announced five years ago, it seems that Team FOLON’s extensive mod isn’t ready for release yet due to technical difficulties.

The Fallout: London team openly acknowledged that Bethesda’s highly anticipated remake of Fallout 4 posed significant challenges to their project, leaving some skeptics questioning if it would be completed. Despite the setbacks and years of dedication, we’re thrilled that this endeavor, featuring the voiceovers of two former Doctors from Doctor Who (Sylvester McCoy and Colin Baker), has come to fruition at last.

Fallout: London reviews aren’t that great

Yo what happened? I thought it was great.

As a passionate gamer and a member of Team FOLON, I can tell you that we’ve been putting in a great deal of effort to bring Fallout: London to life. At one point, it seemed like our collaboration with Bethesda was going smoothly, but things have taken a turn for the worse, and we’re no longer on the best of terms.

Although Fallout: London has attracted many players, its GOG.com review section reveals a mix of opinions. With just a day on the market when this was penned, Fallout: London holds an average rating of 3.5 out of 5. A cursory look at the reviews uncovers a significant issue: numerous glitches.

Many players are having trouble launching the game, resulting in an influx of critical reviews that may not fully represent the experience. On the Fallout Reddit, frustrated gamers expressed their disappointment after encountering issues preventing them from embarking on this adventure to a fresh part of the Fallout universe.

In the same vein as the GOG.com assessments, one critic complained, “The game is riddled with problems and glitches. Many believe it should have been postponed for release.” Another expressed frustration, “Being complimentary about something that’s not fully cooked doesn’t change its status. If someone gave you a free cake with raw ingredients, would you still consume it politely? Regardless of their intentions, it remains undercooked and inedible.”

“I believe that the hype surrounding Fallout: London may have contributed to its own demise. It seemed more akin to a promoted product than an ongoing project. Perhaps if it had been unveiled progressively and updated along the way like other mods typically are, it might have garnered less criticism.”

As Bethesda’s Todd Howard has reiterated there are no plans for the official Fallout games to ever leave the USA, it’s over to modders like Team FOLON to explore the rest of the apocalyptic globe. Even though Fallout: London has the scope to outshine the mainline games, that seemingly all depends on whether you can actually boot it up.
