HBO Max will be back starting tomorrow.
On Wednesday, July 9, Warner Bros. Discovery is set to formally change the name of their streaming service from Max to HBO Max, as confirmed by a reliable source to The Hollywood Reporter.
The initial announcement for the name change was made during WBD’s upfront presentation in May. Since then, Max will be rebranded as HBO Max, a name it adopted from 2020 to 2023. During the upfront, HBO chief Casey Bloys joked, “I know you’re all shocked, but I have plenty of stationery left over from the last time!”
The name change, first announced at WBD’s upfront presentation in May, will see Max transform into HBO Max, a name it used between 2020 and 2023. At the upfront, HBO chief Casey Bloys lightheartedly commented, “I know you’re all surprised, but I still have plenty of stationery from before!
After WBD opted to revise its streaming approach by emphasizing the high-end aspect of HBO’s content, they scaled back in certain sectors such as unscripted and children’s/family programming, choosing quality over quantity compared to competitors like Netflix.
The transformation we’ve undergone is driven by shifting consumer preferences, as it seems people aren’t asking for more content, but rather, they desire improved quality. As other services meet the fundamental needs with quantity, our service, WBD, stands out through its exceptional quality and unique narratives. Over half a century, no brand has delivered this level of quality and consistency in storytelling quite like HBO.
Starting on Wednesday, the HBO Max logo, featuring a more streamlined black-and-white design, will take over where “Max” currently is in your existing app, for users. Contrary to the switch from HBO Max to Max, you won’t need to download any new apps or make changes to your account.
The name modification takes place during a relatively quiet period for the service, having premiered the Warner Bros. movie “Sinners” earlier this month. The film “Billy Joel: And So It Goes,” due out July 18, will feature content related to “Shark Week” later in the month. Moreover, it precedes the commencement of Emmy voting, which is scheduled to begin within a fortnight. As customary, the service is anticipated to have several programs receiving nominations, including the latest season of “The White Lotus.
The upcoming transformation at WBD involves the corporation being divided into two separate entities next year. HBO Max will be part of a newly formed company headed by David Zaslav, alongside Warner Bros.’ film and television production studios. Meanwhile, the linear TV networks are set to be led by Gunnar Weidenfels in a separate company.
The company is also taking HBO Max globally, launching the brand in 12 new markets this month.
Alex Sherman first reported the date of the rebranding.
