Call of Duty players mourn the ‘death’ of Nuketown in Black Ops

As a die-hard Call of Duty fan with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the anticipation for Black Ops 6 has been palpable. With each new trailer and gameplay tease, it seems like Treyarch is truly outdoing themselves this year. However, there’s one thing that’s left many of us scratching our heads: the absence of Nuketown at launch.

2024 seems to be shaping up as a remarkable year for Treyarch, with Black Ops 6 rumored to surpass all previous Call of Duty games in scale and quality. However, isn’t it often said that each new year will bring the best? Yet, this time around, the sneak peeks and trailers hint that the excitement could indeed live up to expectations.

Offering a blend of the traditional Call of Duty appeal along with fresh elements, we’re ready to immerse ourselves once more in an engaging Black Oops story featuring Woods and his team, complete with a dose of Zombies for extra fun. Regrettably, fans of Black Ops 5 are concerned that a crucial aspect of the series might have been overlooked.

Call of Duty players are worried for Nuketown

On August 28th during Call of Duty: NEXT, a multitude of information was disclosed such as the confirmation of a third Zombies map in 2024, the reintroduction of Prestige progression, the return of Verdansk to Warzone for its fifth anniversary, various multiplayer maps, and much more. However, many are inquiring about the location of Nuketown.

Since its debut in Call of Duty: Black Ops back in 2010, Nuketown has been an integral part of the game’s landscape. Over the years, we’ve witnessed different interpretations of this ’50s-themed nuclear test site, but the name Nuketown is now firmly associated with the Black Ops series.

Surprisingly, many gamers found out that at the game’s debut, Nuketown wouldn’t be among the 16 multiplayer maps available. Instead, maps like Derelict and Rewind are being introduced, with Sandhouse, an apparent post-apocalyptic adaptation of Nuketown, also joining the roster. It’s puzzling as to why they didn’t name it ‘Nukedtown’, but we don’t have a say in Treyarch’s decisions.

1. The unveiling has sparked dissatisfaction among Call of Duty purists, who are now worried that the close-quarters combat of Nuketown could be overrun by sand (metaphorically speaking). A frustrated fan reacted to the news with, “They had better provide a regular version of Nuketown. What on earth is this?

1. The first person exclaimed, “‘Rubbish.’ Where can I find the authentic Nuketown?” and another expressed their frustration by saying, “What on earth?! Either provide me with the original Nuketown or I’ll cause a disturbance 😂.” Some were intrigued, as one enthusiast applauded, “That’s quite an interesting idea given all the different Nuketown variations they have offered so far.”

There’s still hope for Nuketown

At present, it’s worth noting that you might want to calm down a bit, as Nuketown isn’t deceased but rather quite alive. The recent introduction of Area 99 Warzone map has made it clear that Nuketown isn’t a single entity, but is essentially mass-produced (much like its mannequins), which explains why we’ve seen variations in 2025 and 2070.

Although Sandhouse appears to be a nuclear-affected version of the original Nuketown, it’s plausible that the original (OG) remains untouched and secure somewhere else. It’s worth mentioning that the June Black Ops 6 Direct confirmed the arrival of the classic Nuketown, as indicated in the timestamp provided. Given some speculation in the comments, it seems Sandhouse could be a variant of Nuketown debuting at launch, while the original version is set to be released as part of the game’s seasonal content updates.

Could it be possible that this year’s Call of Duty game could feature not one but two versions of the iconic map, Nuketown? Given Treyarch’s recent claim of having the largest Zombies map ever created, it certainly seems plausible that they might want to give fans a double dose of their cherished blast site. Rest assured, the destruction of Nuketown is only a temporary nuke event.
