Call of Duty, VALORANT, and Overwatch snubbed from Olympic Esports Games

Call of Duty, VALORANT, and Overwatch snubbed from Olympic Esports Games

As a long-time fan and follower of esports, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and disappointment with the recent news about the Olympic Esports Games. The IOC’s decision to officially include esports in the Olympics is a monumental step forward for our community, yet their choice of games leaves me feeling somewhat disconnected.

For a long time, esports has been close but not quite made it into the Olympics. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has organized numerous international competitions for certain games, yet they have not fully embraced esports by committing fully to its inclusion.

In 2023, the IOC introduced Esports Games featuring predominantly simulation titles that seemed disconnected from the current trends, paving the way for potential inclusion of additional ‘conventional’ esports games in future events.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has made an official decision to support the Olympic Esports Games. The inaugural event for this new initiative will take place in Saudi Arabia.

“Thanks to your ballots, the Olympic Esports Games now exist,” IOC President Thomas Bach announced, furthermore extending his greetings to “our valued counterparts from the Saudi National Olympic Committee.”

Reports from L’Equipe suggest that Rocket League, EA FC 25, League of Legends, sim-racing, and Tic Tac Bow are among the virtual sports games being considered.)

According to trustworthy journalist Rod “Slasher” Breslau, the International Olympic Committee has decided against including shooters in their plans.

These games including Call of Duty, VALORANT, Overwatch, and Counter-Strike may not be included, as well as Slasher mentioning that it’s uncertain if Nintendo will grant licenses for their Smash Bros. series.

Six out of the top ten most-watched games are shooter titles, indicating significant opposition to the Olympic Esports Games. However, a global League of Legends competition could potentially draw a large audience.
