Call of Duty’s latest resurrection is a step too far for fans

As a long-time Call of Duty player and avid follower of the lore, I have to express my disappointment and frustration with the latest announcement regarding the return of Ivan Alexxeve in Modern Warfare 3’s Season 5. It feels like we’re back to square one with this franchise, as if they can’t let go of their past characters, no matter how dead or defunct they may be.

As someone who has been following the Call of Duty series for years, I can’t help but feel a sense of deja vu as we approach the releases of Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone Season 5 on July 24. It seems like just yesterday when we were writing about how CoD had a hard time letting go of old characters and storylines. And guess what? Here we are once again, with yet another not-so-surprising character return in the works.

In the fifth season, Valeria, everyone’s beloved antagonist from previous seasons, returns to stir up trouble once again. It’s not just Val making a comeback, though; surprisingly, Season 5 brings back Ivan Alexxeve, who was believed to have perished. The hitch? He’s allegedly deceased.

In a surprising turn of events for Season 5, Ivan, the ex-leader of Konni, has been revealed to have returned. We tragically watched Ivan meet his end when Andrei Nolan fired an X12 gun at him, hitting his head – a seemingly fatal blow. However, this is Call of Duty we’re talking about.

In the authentic Season 5 reports from Activision, they make it clear that Ivan has returned after supposedly being deceased. The details explain, “The arrival of Valeria and Ivan Alexeve as Battle Pass characters, in addition to an impressive lineup of WWE stars including Rhea Ripley, “The American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes, and Rey Mysterio.”

On X, previously known as Twitter, someone posted: “Ivan is betrayed and shot in the head by Konni, miraculously survives, and then re-joins him – what on earth is going on?” In the Call of Duty universe, Ivan becomes yet another character who refuses to be let go, despite his minor role. This decision raises questions as to why other more significant characters haven’t been given a similar chance.

I, as a frustrated gamer, implored Treyarch, “Please save me, Treyarch, please save me,” expressing my disappointment with their takeover for Black Ops 6. Another fan wrote passionately, “Stop resurrecting every deceased character; this is not part of the storyline.” A third person added humorously, “This is just a setup for when Soap is secretly alive, ‘I wasn’t in that urn,’ he’ll say.”

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but notice the recurring complaints in the gaming community about why Ivan made it out alive while “Soap” McTavish didn’t. Soap, a beloved character from Modern Warfare 3 in 2011 and its 2023 counterpart, met his end in both games, leaving many players feeling disappointed or even angry. Although this dramatic turn of events is a significant part of the franchise’s history, it hasn’t sat well with everyone. Some fans have gone as far as reimagining their personal headcanon (fan-made backstory) to keep Soap alive.

If Ivan recovers from a brain bullet wound, there’s a slim possibility that Soap might reappear in our lives somehow, but we prefer for him to accept his current situation. It’s not just the bizarre costumes in Call of Duty that face criticism for being implausible, and despite some fans’ wishes, let’s avoid altering Soap’s storyline.
