Cameron Diaz Gets Real About Whether She’ll Keep Acting After Returning For Back In Action, And Reveals The Movie Genre She’s Done With

As a gamer who has seen countless movies over the past three decades, I can confidently say that Cameron Diaz has always been a staple in my movie-watching journey. From her iconic roles in romantic comedies like “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and “The Holiday,” to her action-packed performances in films like “Charlie’s Angels,” she has undeniably left an indelible mark on the silver screen.

For twenty consecutive years, Cameron Diaz was featured in at least one film annually and enjoyed a string of successes. However, for the past ten years, she’s been absent from acting entirely. Yet, her acting break has now come to an end as she agreed to star in Netflix’s 2025 movie, “Back In Action“. With fans eagerly awaiting her return to the silver screen after such a long absence, there are questions about whether she might be planning a grand comeback. Interestingly, the actress has shared her initial views on this matter.

Ever since the trailer for “Back In Action” was released a month ago, there has been an overwhelming outpouring of affection towards Cameron Diaz and her return to the silver screen. Given that her last film, “Annie”, came out in 2014, this comeback is certainly long overdue. When asked if she plans to stay active in the industry now that she’s featured among Netflix’s upcoming movie and TV show releases, here’s what she had to say:

My perspective on it is unclear; it’s challenging to express. If I express an opinion, it solidifies into something specific. I maintain the freedom to refuse participating in another movie, and I can also agree if I choose to. I’m not setting boundaries or making decisions; instead, I remain open to whatever feels suitable for me and my family at any particular time.

In a conversation with Empire, Cameron Diaz opted against defining the next phase of her career after Back In Action. Yet, she’s far from planning an immediate retirement, especially since it was disclosed that she’ll be part of the 2026 Shrek 5, reuniting with Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy. Moreover, she’s wrapped up a comedy for AppleTV+ titled Outcome, co-starring Keanu Reeves.

The actress has a clear understanding that there’s a popular genre she doesn’t plan on returning to again. To quote her directly:

No more romcoms, only momcoms.

Over time, Cameron Diaz has graced many memorable romantic comedies, including “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and “The Holiday”. However, following her recent announcement, it appears that the actress intends to steer clear of returning to this genre in the future.

Indeed, it seems possible that we might witness a resurgence of Cameron Diaz’s acting career, but given her selective nature, she will probably be discerning about the roles she decides to take on.

It could be assumed that the actress who starred in Charlie’s Angels might seem a bit out of practice after such a long hiatus from acting. However, at 52 years old, she remains just as funny and action-packed as ever, delivering top-notch performance in her latest film. Don’t miss the teaser for Back In Action here:

In the Netflix film, Cameron Diaz reunites with Jamie Foxx, whom she worked with in 1999’s “Any Given Sunday” and 2014’s “Annie,” to portray ex-CIA agents who are coaxed back into the realm of espionage after many years, following the establishment of their family. Essentially, she returns to acting, but more than that, she finds herself in a thrilling, action-packed role again.

You can watch Back In Action with a Netflix subscription on January 17.
