Cameron Diaz on Return to Hollywood: “I Reserve the Right to Say No to Doing a Movie Ever Again”

Cameron Diaz is not looking to put a label on her Hollywood return.

After a decade-long break, the actress who recently returned to screens via Netflix’s “Back in Action,” discussed with Empire magazine whether her return signifies a permanent comeback.

As a gamer, I can’t quite put it into words. It’s tricky to express, but here goes: “I haven’t made up my mind yet about it. If I commit, it feels like a game level I might not be ready for just yet. I’ve got the power to choose whether to accept or decline any future movie roles. It all depends on what aligns with me and my family’s current situation.

The actress from “Charlie’s Angels,” known for her roles in numerous romantic comedies during the late ’90s and 2000s, also made it clear that she had no plans to return to the romantic comedy genre. Instead, she humorously expressed her interest in taking on roles in “mom-coms.

Diaz has gained fame for her memorable performances in romantic comedies like “The Holiday,” “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “The Other Woman,” “What Happens in Vegas,” and “In Her Shoes.” But her latest film, titled “Back in Action,” is a blend of action and comedy, co-starring Jamie Foxx.

The movie chronicles the story of ex-CIA agents Emily (Diaz) and Matt (Foxx), who find themselves drawn back into covert operations when their hidden personas are revealed. Additionally, this film marks a reunion for these two actors, as they previously worked together in 1999’s “Any Given Sunday” and 2014’s “Annie,” which was also Diaz’s last screen appearance before her break from acting.

She mentioned that if she were to return for another movie, it would only be alongside Foxx, she declared. To be honest, there were other options presented to her throughout the process, but each time she refused, stating emphatically, “No, I’m not doing it, I’ve told you… Oh, is Jamie asking? Yes, I can work with Jamie!

Over the last ten years, Diaz has become a mother to two kids, daughter Raddix and son Cardinal, along with her husband, rocker Benji Madden from Good Charlotte. Additionally, in 2020, she started a clean wine brand named Avaline together with her partner Katherine Power.

Back in Action drops on Netflix Friday.
