And let me tell you, I’m thrilled that I decided to give it a watch! This film delivers everything a connoisseur of campy, gory thrillers could ask for – a small-time wrestling promotion performing in the eerie confines of a secluded cult’s compound. It’s an absolute rollercoaster ride that culminates in one of the most outlandish endings I’ve encountered on this year’s movie schedule.

However, the outrageous finale is merely one factor contributing to my ongoing fascination with Lowell Dean’s newest directing project. If you appreciate wrestling, horror, or the intersection of these genres, this wrestling film is an enticing production that you shouldn’t overlook.

Dark Match Teases The Devil, But I Didn’t See Him Showing Up To Fight A Wrestler

As a die-hard film enthusiast with an affinity for wrestling, I’d put it this way: In “Dark Match,” I found myself captivated by Chris Jericho, a character once known for his grappling skills who now leads a cult and produces illegal deathmatch wrestling videos. He extends an invitation to the SAW Wrestling roster, a small Canadian promotion, for a unique event tailored for his followers. And just like the fateful days of WCW, this film is chock-full of unexpected twists and turns.

At one instant, you might suspect that The Prophet, who harbors animosity towards Joe Lean (Steven Ogg) due to an old feud, is in fact performing actions for the devil. The next moment, you may doubt his authenticity, believing he’s merely creating a snuff film. And then, something extraordinary unfolds.

As I stepped out of the compound in the movie’s climax, it was none other than Lucifer who barred my path – yes, the devil himself materialized from thin air, daring us to engage in combat. Can you believe it? It was like the final scene of a wrestling drama, yet just as we prepared for our confrontation, the battle never commenced.

This Movie Is Campy As All Hell, But That’s What I Love About Wrestling And Horror

Let me clarify that I’m not trying to mimic Stefon from Saturday Night Live, but Dark Match certainly delivers. Are you intrigued by storylines where the good wrestlers are mysteriously drugged or possessed, transforming them into mindless wrestling zombies? How about a match taking place on a colossal fan, or an inferno match culminating in someone being set alight? You’ll find all that and more in Dark Match – it’s fantastic!

Essentially, “Dark Match” combines the silliest and most dramatic elements of professional wrestling and horror into a delightful, gory, and exhilarating tribute to both realms. Despite my appreciation for top-tier A24 horror films and serious wrestling featuring skilled performers, I can’t ignore my fondness for cheesy slasher movies and outlandish wrestling storylines.

Despite The Goofiness, Dark Match Does Get A Lot Right About Wrestling

Despite the fact that Lowell Dean is recognized for creating the chaotic slasher flick, Dark Match, it’s evident that he has a good understanding of professional wrestling. The film effectively captures many aspects of the sport, such as the separation of faces and heels during their journey to the compound (a practice that was uncommon due to kayfabe), and the in-ring action is always convincing.

Many of the interpersonal relationships, particularly those between ring adversaries Kate the Great (Sara Canning) and Miss Behave, have a strong ’80s vibe, and their portrayal seems genuinely authentic.

We Need More Movies Where Chris Jericho Plays A Crazed Cult Leader

Throughout his wrestling career, Chris Jericho has engaged in actions that some might find reprehensible. However, there’s no disputing that this veteran of WCW and WWF, who continues to compete regularly in AEW, is among the greatest wrestlers of all time. He was one of my favorite wrestlers growing up, and it was a real treat to see him receive substantial screen time during Dark Match.

The Prophet bore a striking resemblance to modern iterations of Jericho’s wrestling character, excelling as an engaging antagonist. This is particularly so because it remains unclear whether he genuinely believes in the devil story or is fabricating it for effect. In essence, there’s a strong desire to witness more of this captivating portrayal immediately!

I might not rank “Dark Match” among the greatest horror films ever made, but it’s fair to say that this wrestling-themed slasher provided a level of entertainment that exceeded my expectations.
