Modern creatures scarcely hold the same captivating allure as Frankenstein, Dracula, and other timeless Universal monster figures. However, at Orlando’s Epic Universe park in Florida, the Dark Universe district offers an exhilarating fright ride that will undoubtedly mesmerize guests. In Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, these legendary figures have been rejuvenated – or so to say – with animatronics appearing almost lifelike, even showing signs of breathing.
Every generation will find the allure of this attraction captivating and thrilling. Indeed, children (provided they are over 48 inches tall) are also welcome to join in the fun. Given that families with kids are flocking to Epic Universe and its five distinctive realms, SYFY Wire had a chat with Monsters Unchained’s production designer, Frances Franceschi, to uncover exclusive details about the park’s horror epicenter, Monsters Unchained.
As it happens, there are instances of light-heartedness or humor – what you might call a “comical break” – included in the experience specifically designed to amuse both children and adults who may be timid. (Franceschi’s words)
She clarified that our aim was to maintain the excitement, eeriness, and scare factor, but at the same time, strike a harmony between these elements.
SPOILER ALERT: The rest of this article will have minor spoilers for Monsters Unchained.
What is the story behind Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment?
As a gamer, I’m thrilled to be among the invitees to venture into the eerie catacombs of Dr. Frankenstein’s ancestral mansion. Here, Victoria, his great-great-granddaughter, is set to exhibit her macabre skills, having created a monstrous being in the vein of her twisted forebear. During our tour, she displays her uncanny control over the hordes of Darkmoore’s ghouls, leaving us awestruck.
However, things take an unexpected turn when Dracula, the enigmatic vampire, decides to defy Victoria and unleashes a wave of chaos by liberating all the imprisoned monsters – the Wolf Man, The Mummy, and others. The once controlled atmosphere quickly transforms into a thrilling and nerve-wracking spectacle, as we find ourselves in the midst of an epic clash between the old guard and the new!
At the onset of the journey, visitors encounter Victoria and her mechanical monster – both are authentic-looking and life-sized, not operated by people. Additionally, Ygor, her faithful aid, makes an appearance through video screen to elucidate the remarkable tech behind the “Catacombs Navigation System,” providing a sneak peek of the ride with a dash of wit.
Franceschi stated that Ygor serves as an excellent representation of comedic relief. He possesses a unique charm and eccentricity. Initially, he may seem a bit unapproachable, but once you get to know him, it becomes clear that he’s just struggling with these complex navigation systems. I believe we intentionally incorporated humor through Ygor in this otherwise tense journey.
Survival tips for families navigating Monsters Unchained

In this attraction, often referred to as a “dark ride,” you’ll find an impressive blend of technology reminiscent of Harry Potter’s Battle at the Ministry. However, unlike the traditional setup, here, groups of four take seats that are connected to a large arm mechanism. This device rotates and even flips riders almost 180 degrees as they flee through underground tunnels, pursued by the terrifying creatures unleashed along the way.
According to Franceschi, it’s best for kids to experience the fun of the attraction during the daytime. He’s observed that even children as young as seven can handle this ride.
As a gamer, I’d say: “During the day, there’s one kind of experience, but at night, it’s like an entirely new layer is unveiled. It definitely amplifies the eerie, spine-tingling atmosphere. Plus, it helps to prepare kids for some of the scarier moments, like when the Brides of Dracula rise from their coffins, adding to the chaos.
According to Franceschi, as our brides progress on their journey, they seem to show signs of deterioration, which, in my opinion, only enhances their spooky quality.
I’d recommend gradually diving into Monsters Unchained, perhaps by first transforming myself into a monster using some creative face paint. Then, let’s explore the kid-friendly roller coaster for a thrilling ride. Lastly, let’s meander through the Dark Universe realm, taking in all the intricate details it has to offer!
She notes that overall, Darkmoor is stunning, starting from Curse of the Werewolf, where the makeup is captivating, and moving on to Monsters Unchained.
All five worlds of Epic Universe are ready to explore. Find out how to get tickets here.
