Can Rocksteady Save its Rep with Another Batman Game?

As a longtime fan of Rocksteady and the Arkham series, I must admit that the recent release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League left me feeling rather disheartened. The game, which promised an exciting and innovative take on the DC universe, seemed to falter under the weight of its own ambition. However, if the latest rumors are true, it looks like Rocksteady may be returning to their roots – or should I say, their cape and cowl?

Rocksteady Studios, renowned for transforming the Batman series through their Arkham trilogy, have unfortunately faced a wave of negative criticism following the launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, a game that received largely unfavorable reviews.

To date, the game has occasionally offered additional content through DLC. However, it appears the live service aspect of this AAA title has been a catastrophe without hope for recovery. With this in view, it seems Rocksteady is preparing to revisit the series that initially propelled them into prominence.

According to a tweet by Xbox Era’s Nick Baker (@Shpeshal_Nick), in response to a post from The Game Awards, there are indications that Rocksteady Studios are developing a new Batman game. Interestingly, it seems that Sony may be trying to secure the game as an exclusive for their PlayStation platform.

I’m not certain which studio fans have been wishing for, but I’ve heard that Rocksteady is returning to develop it. Additionally, I believe Sony might be attempting to capitalize on it, humorously speaking.

In addition to what Baker mentioned, it’s plausible that Rocksteady might find it beneficial to revisit an existing intellectual property. This strategy is similar to what CD Projekt Red is employing for their upcoming _Witcher_ game.

Are Arkham Games Even Good Anymore?

Arkham Asylum and Arkham City are highly regarded as exceptional Batman series, but by Arkham Knight, some issues began to surface in Rocksteady’s work. Many fans were not enthusiastic about the excessive use of the Batmobile, and the narrative of Arkham Knight didn’t carry the same punch as the earlier Joker-focused tales.

Previous spin-offs of the Arkham series, produced by other studios, failed to captivate audiences upon their release. The game Gotham Knights was met with unfavorable reviews at launch, despite offering players the opportunity to control four distinct members of the Bat-family. Additionally, while Arkham Origins might have had its loyal followers, it didn’t receive the same level of praise as the original games did.

In terms of “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League,” the original concept was quite intriguing; however, it appears that the shift in the developers’ focus towards transforming the game into a live-service multiplayer title with a battle pass has somewhat diluted the initial premise.

Fans felt it was less entertaining for Captain Boomerang and King Shark to primarily wield guns, considering they each possess unique and amusing weapon or power quirks.

If it’s true that Rocksteady is returning to develop a new Batman game, it’s bound to attract attention. This could potentially be an opportunity for the studio to rectify the issues they faced with Arkham Knight and Suicide Squad; however, it might also indicate that Rocksteady’s creative prowess may be limited beyond the world of Batman.

It’s possible we might see a game based on the Justice League at some point, or individual games centered around heroes such as Superman and Green Lantern, however, currently, it seems that Batman is the character with a strong basis to serve as the main hero in a video game.

Rocksteady has not officially announced a new Batman game.
