As a long-time action movie enthusiast who’s seen more than my fair share of high-octane thrillers, I must say that “Canary Black” on Prime Video is a rollercoaster ride worth taking! Kate Beckinsale delivers an electrifying performance as Avery, a CIA operative with a hidden past. The plot twists and turns keep you guessing until the very end, and the action sequences are top-notch.

In a nutshell, the film “Canary Black” on Prime Video features Kate Beckinsale portraying the character Avery Graves, a resourceful CIA agent who embarks on a dangerous mission to save her husband from a ruthless terrorist group that threatens to release the Canary Black virus globally. Directed by Pierre Morel, known for helming the action-packed movie “Taken” featuring Liam Neeson, this thriller follows a somewhat predictable storyline. However, Beckinsale’s powerful acting and Ray Stevenson’s performance in one of his final roles as Avery’s mentor and CIA Director Jarvis Hedlund make it a compelling watch.

So, what becomes of Avery’s spouse? Was it indeed the Canary Black virus that was dispersed globally? Let’s find out!

What Happens in Canary Black?

In the opening scene, Avery Graves demonstrates her credibility as she pursues a highly classified document containing details about an assassin known as Kali, stationed in Tokyo, Japan. Along the way, she manages to neutralize several men to accomplish her mission. Meanwhile, residing in Croatia, we meet Avery’s husband, David Brooks (portrayed by Rupert Friend), who remains oblivious to his wife’s clandestine career as an intelligence operative. Despite this secretive lifestyle, Avery and David share a strong bond of love, maintaining a harmonious marriage.

One day, having completed my shift at the clandestine CIA office where I work, I return home only to discover that my husband has mysteriously vanished. Shortly after, I receive a call from the enigmatic group responsible for his abduction, demanding that I retrieve a critical file known as Canary Black from one of the CIA’s covert facilities. Initially, I attempt to outsmart them by having a trusted ally, Sorina (Romina Tonkovic), trace their number. However, they had already vacated the premises. With no other options, I venture to the Black Site and seek out Laszlo Stoica, the individual they claim possesses the Canary Black file. Upon confronting him, I extract his tooth as instructed, yet find no hidden file within.

In a turn of events, Avery seeks refuge in her hideout for some funds, only to encounter an assassin lurking inside. She manages to neutralize this threat. Meanwhile, Hedlund learns from the CIA’s Deputy Director Nathan Evans (Ben Miles) that the Canary Black file contains compromising information about everyone within the U.S. government. Later on, Avery seeks assistance from Hedlund, but he turns on her and informs the CIA. However, during their transport back, their vehicles are ambushed by terrorists who had abducted Avery’s spouse. In a miraculous escape, she breaks free from their grasp.

She learns that she can get the Canary Black file from a secure CIA server, and asks Hedlund for the nearest location. After he gets it to her, she goes there and just barely gets the file. Avery then realizes it’s not simply a blackmail list but a virus capable of infecting all the world’s computers country by country, disrupting everything including stock markets, governments, and more. Avery hotfoots it to the phone where she’s expected to make the drop by the terrorists. There, she’s drugged and brought to the organization, as Canary Black enters its third act.

What Happens at the End of Canary Black?

It comes to light that Goran Kostic, head of the National Security Service in Croatia, is the mastermind behind the disruption at the Global Unification Summit. Using his computer, he issues a chilling ultimatum to every nation present, threatening them with the Canary Black virus unless they each hand over 1% of their GDP. To prove his point, he unleashes the virus on Singapore. In a separate development, Hedlund successfully identifies the terrorist organization but meets a tragic end when he is assassinated by Kostic.

In the terrorists’ lair, Avery is being tormented, but when David enters, he astounds her with his abilities. Despite getting shot in the abdomen by Breznov, David overpowers his henchmen and frees Avery. It turns out that David is Kali, the assassin, who had a $20 million bounty on him due to a failed job for the Russian mob. He exposed his identity to Breznov after this incident. Kali had told Breznov about Canary Black as it was the only thing he could use against him. However, Kali insists that their marriage was genuine, but Avery pays no heed. She flees from the room and sets out to pursue Breznov.

She pursues Breznov and his accomplice, the one behind the virus outbreak, wounding the associate with a gunshot to the leg. In a brutal confrontation, Avery and Breznov clash violently until Avery fatally stabs Breznov. However, her task isn’t complete as she soon discovers that the accomplice has transferred data from Canary Black onto his computer. As the upload progresses on the computer, Avery dashes to the device and successfully disconnects it from the server before the transfer is finished.

What Happens with Avery and Kali?

After Avery murders Breznov and halts the virus, Kali arrives and assures Avery they’re still connected, but she’s uncertain. She hands back his rings and explains there won’t be a fairytale ending for them, as a group from the CIA enters the scene. Before departing, Kali professes his love for her and leaps out of the window into the canal below. The authorities apprehend Avery.

Later, Evans questions her at an undisclosed CIA facility, but their conversation is cut short when Elizabeth Mills (Saffron Burrows) intervenes. Mills presents Avery with a proposition to join MC6, a recently established agency specializing in missions that exceed the capacity of other agencies. Unsurprisingly, she agrees. As she exits the facility, she spots her husband’s ring on the ground and takes it with her. Could this imply a potential sequel where Avery and Kali face each other again? Watch it on Prime Video.
