As a long-time fan of Candace Cameron Bure, it’s truly fascinating to witness her journey from the beloved child star of Full House to the Queen of Christmas movies. Her dedication to her craft and her commitment to delivering heartwarming stories that resonate with audiences is nothing short of inspiring.
Candace Cameron Bure, once a beloved child actor from “Full House,” is now familiarly known as the Christmas Monarch, and she shows no signs of letting up on her busy schedule.
Cameroon Bure gained fame for her character in the sitcoms Full House and its Netflix sequel Fuller House, as well as numerous Hallmark Channel Christmas movies. In 2022, she shifted to the Great American Family channel and took on an executive role there. This year alone, she has produced two Christmas films: A Christmas Less Traveled and Home Sweet Christmas.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the tirelessly productive actress delves into her preferences when it comes to choosing a new holiday movie. She also shares why she abandoned one project featuring Cameron Mathison and subsequently found another one with him. Furthermore, she talks about her unique plans for a sequel to a Christmas film and her special connection with the Full House cast, as well as her response to news stories stemming from an earlier interview on GAF’s priorities.
Are you choosing a fresh Christmas project this year, or does your focus lie in understanding what resonates with your audience?
I’m on the hunt for something unique and heartfelt in the Christmas scripts I read all year round. For Great American Family channel, which emphasizes faith in our movies and presents “Christmas as it’s meant to be,” I seek stories that are deeply moving and have a deeper purpose beyond just the traditional Christmas magic or Santa Claus tropes. After reading the first few pages, I can usually tell if a script is fresh and engaging or if it’s a repetitive tale.
Previously this year, it was shared that you’d be sharing the screen with Cameron Mathison in an upcoming Christmas film, and afterwards, it was mentioned that both of you would be working on a new script. I’m curious if there are multiple Christmas movie scripts readily available to be used at any given moment?
Generally speaking, it’s our wish that such situations don’t arise, but this year, unfortunately, they did. We had a script titled “Jingle Bells, Wedding Bells” that we believed would suit us perfectly. However, as we delved into the production aspects, I soon realized it may not be the best film we could produce. Consequently, I decided to halt its progress swiftly. Upon revisiting “Home Sweet Christmas,” I found myself thinking, “In truth, this script is more fitting for us as a duo” due to our portrayal of childhood friends reunited on screen. This narrative mirrors Cameron and me, as we’ve been friends for an extended period but haven’t collaborated professionally before.
There seems to be a lot of enthusiasm among fans about the possibility of you both teaming up. Are there other actors, whose work you admire and would love to collaborate with, quite often?
Cameron is one of those individuals who shares a significant history in our genre, given that we’ve often been key players in movies. It was quite surprising, reflecting on the fact that we hadn’t collaborated before. In truth, I seldom reprise roles with the same co-star as I enjoy working with fresh talent and introducing new faces to our audience. However, our chemistry proved so compelling that we are contemplating a follow-up to this film. The response from fans has been very positive.
Given that your 2022 interview about Great American Family generated news headlines concerning the channel’s focus on traditional marriage, and subsequently, Jodie Sweetin expressed dissatisfaction over her show being acquired by the network. Has it been challenging to communicate the values of this network when viewers may not be familiar with its content offerings?
Communicating with media outlets can indeed pose challenges. We’re thankful for those who direct audiences to our channels, but there’s always a risk because responses might get taken out of context. This happened to me during the transition to Great American Family, and it was a tough period. It was disheartening to be misrepresented in such a way. However, I want to clarify that we are still a young channel, only in our fourth year of Christmas programming. Like any new business, we have a specific target demographic and aim to cater to their preferences. Most networks don’t strive to appeal to everyone. What sets us apart from other channels is our willingness to discuss God and the role He plays in our lives rather than fate or providence.
During these times, our nation seems to be quite polarized. Does this consideration play any role in the filmmaking process, as you strive to bring audiences together?
Absolutely, this has been the underlying theme in all the films I’ve created. I believe that kindness is universal, and it’s the compassionate essence I strive to infuse into every project I undertake, reflecting my belief in the love of all beings.
The passing away of Bob Saget has left us all feeling quite sorrowful. Any chatter lately about reviving Full House with a new cast?
So far, we haven’t delved into that topic. The revival of Fuller House on Netflix was a huge hit, but I don’t foresee another version in the future. If they ever decided to create another one, I believe everyone would be excited about it. We still maintain strong bonds with each other.
You continue to be wildly prolific. What are your plans for next year?
I’ll probably shoot another four to five movies in 2025. It’s what I love doing.
