Cannes: Christian Petzold’s ‘Miroirs No. 3’ Sells Wide Ahead of Festival Debut

The Match Factory has secured numerous distribution agreements for Miroirs No. 3, the newest film by renowned German director Christian Petzold, before its first public screening in the Directors’ Fortnight segment at the Cannes Film Festival.

Film Distribution Duties: French distribution of “Miroirs No. 3” will be managed by Les Films du Losange. Meanwhile, Imagine Film Distribution is responsible for its release in Benelux, M&M International covers South Korea, Yeni Bir Film handles Turkey, Leopardo Filmes takes care of Portugal, Stadtkino Filmverleih looks after Austria, Independenta film is in charge of Romania, A-One Film manages the Baltics, and Demiurg oversees the territories that were once part of Yugoslavia.

Metrograph Pictures has pre-bought the movie for North America.

In “Miroirs No. 3,” we follow Paula Beer’s character, Laura – a frequent collaborator with Petzold – who is a piano student from Berlin. During a weekend excursion in the countryside, she survives a car accident. Although physically unhurt, she’s deeply shaken psychologically and is welcomed into the home of a local resident who witnessed the crash. As Laura integrates into their household, which includes the woman’s husband and adult son, they start to develop a delicate familial bond. However, this harmony is fleeting as hidden pasts resurface, forcing Laura to confront her unresolved personal history.

The movie signifies the fourth joint project between Petzold and Beer, who won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at Berlinale 2020 for her performance in “Undine”. Beer is partnered with Barbara Auer (known for “The Book Thief” and “Yella”), Matthias Brandt (“Transit” and “Farewell to Europe“), and Enno Trebs (“Afire” and “The White Ribbon”).

The third Miroirs film was created jointly by Schramm Film Koerner Weber Kaiser, along with ZDF and Arte as production partners.
