Janus Films acquires the distribution rights for Sergei Loznitsa’s competition film at Cannes, titled “Two Prosecutors“.
A Soviet-era thriller directed by a Ukrainian filmmaker, set during Stalin’s Great Purge in 1937, won the François Chalais Prize at Cannes. The movie, titled “Two Prosecutors“, revolves around a fresh law school graduate who, as a young prosecutor, fights against corruption within the Soviet system and ultimately confronts the repercussions of his actions.
The play is adapted from a novella penned by the Soviet scientist and political detainee Georgy Demidov and features Aleksandr Kuznetsov, Alexander Filippenko, Anatoli Beliy, Andris Keišs, and Vytautas Kaniušonis in its cast.
In a review for the Cannes Film Festival, The Hollywood Reporter’s film critic Jordan Mintzer praised this historical drama as exceptionally well-directed and skillfully acted. He noted that it offers an intense, confining portrayal of life within the U.S.S.R. during Stalin’s Great Purge, with a palpable air of tension and oppression.
Director Loznitsa expressed his pride in handing over his newest movie to Janus Films, adding that he’s eager to collaborate with them for the first time. He believes wholeheartedly that they will provide a powerful North American debut for the film.
Two Prosecutors is a gripping and tense thriller skillfully created by Sergei, which delves into the chilling horrors of the past while mirroring contemporary political truths. We’re thrilled to present this essential film and are happy to be working with Kevin, Said, and the entire SBS Productions team once again,” Janus Films stated in their announcement.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I was thrilled to learn that the distributor had secured other anticipated titles from Cannes 2025. Among them were the Special Jury Prize winner, “Resurrection” directed by Bi Gan; another historical drama, “Magellan,” masterfully crafted by Lav Diaz; and “The Love That Remains,” a poignant work by Hlynur Palmason.
The film “Two Prosecutors” is created by a team consisting of Kevin Chneiweiss, Regina Bouchehri, Gunnar Dedio, Birgit Rasch, Loznitsa, Maria Choustova, Alise Gelze, Vlad Radulescu, Uljana Kim, Viola Fügen, Michael Weber, and Cécile Tollu-Polonowski.
Lately, Janus Films has debuted a variety of films. Among them are Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Academy Award-winning movie “Drive My Car,” Alain Guiraudie’s “Misericordia” from this year, David Cronenberg’s suspenseful film “The Shrouds,” and Jia Zhangke’s “Caught By The Tides.
