This year’s Cannes Film Festival will see California basking in the sun of the French Riviera. For the first time, the American Pavilion – a key hub of the U.S. film industry during the festival – is hosting a “California Day” on May 15, early in the event. This special day aims to highlight California’s significant contribution to international cinema and movie innovation. The organizers have planned “inspiring speeches, lively discussions, and fruitful networking events” for this occasion, focusing on the state’s impact on the global film industry.
Julie Sisk, founder and president of The American Pavilion, stated that our goal has always been to recognize creativity and offer educational resources to future filmmakers by showcasing influential figures within the industry. In light of this year, we believe it’s crucial to acknowledge California’s exceptional history in worldwide entertainment. Given the hardships the industry has faced recently, setting aside a day to highlight California is vital to underscore its lasting influence and cultural importance in movie making.
The American Pavilion is collaborating with Visit California, the California Film Commission, and IndieWire for an upcoming event. IndieWire will arrange a keynote speech focusing on “The Future of Filmmaking in California: Innovation, Creativity, and Global Impact.” This speech will delve into California’s growing influence within the film industry, covering topics such as the blend of technology and storytelling, California’s status as a creative powerhouse, and the significance of environmental sustainability during production. Further discussions will explore Hollywood’s impact on the global entertainment scene and consider technology’s role in the future of filmmaking in California. The identities of the speakers are expected to be revealed in the upcoming weeks, according to the organizers. The 2025 Cannes Film Festival is scheduled for May 13-24.
Speaking about this matter, Caroline Beteta – president and CEO of Visit California – expresses her excitement: “Enthusiasts of cinema from across the globe fantasize about exploring locations from their beloved movies, and California offers an unparalleled playground for filmmakers. We’re delighted to showcase California’s diverse landscapes at the renowned Cannes Film Festival, emphasizing that Hollywood stands as the heart of the entertainment industry and a crucial economic pillar for our state, requiring ongoing support to maintain its competitive edge on the global scene.
The American Pavilion is primarily recognized as the venue for the Roger Ebert Conference Series at Cannes, which hosts talks with filmmakers and influential figures in the industry, along with the Emerging Filmmaker Showcase, Culinary Program, and Worldwide Student Program. This location, offering stunning vistas of the Riviera and numerous facilities, is additionally a favored gathering spot for professionals in the field during the Cannes festival, as they network and connect.
The American Pavilion is owned by Penske Media, the parent company of The Hollywood Reporter.
