At the heart of anticipation for the 2025 Cannes Film Festival was the film, Die, My Love. It graced the Grand Théâtre Lumière stage for its global debut on Saturday night, and the audience responded with a prolonged six-minute standing ovation.
The movie, a reinterpretation of Ariana Harwicz’s 2017 book with the same title (but set in Montana instead of France), was jointly written and directed by renowned art-house filmmaker Lynne Ramsay. It was also co-produced by, and features Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence delivering one of her most challenging roles in recent years.
In a unique, two-hour movie, the actress Lawrence portrays a woman who experiences postpartum depression and occasionally slips into psychosis after giving birth. Robert Pattinson takes on the role of her husband, while Sissy Spacek, an Academy Award winner, and Nick Nolte, an Academy Award nominee, play his parents. Additionally, LaKeith Stanfield is also featured in the film as a notable character.
The story started when Lawrence mailed a book over to Ramsay for potential collaboration in the year 2022. Ramsay agreed and teamed up with Alice Birch and Enda Walsh to write a script. Filming was initially scheduled for 2023, but it got postponed due to two consecutive strikes in the Hollywood industry.
Die, My Love” was created by Lawrence in collaboration with Justine Ciarrocchi at Excellent Cadaver, as well as Black Label Media – a venture shared by Molly Smith, Thad Luckinbill, and Trent Luckinbill; Andrea Calderwood; and Martin Scorsese from Sikelia Productions.
The film did not screen for buyers before its premiere.
