Cannes Power Outage Disrupts City, Festival Continues

On the last day of the 78th Cannes Film Festival, the city experienced an unexpected cliffhanger ending as a suspected act of sabotage triggered a widespread power outage, affecting not only Cannes but also the surrounding areas.

Starting from 10:00 am, an outage brought screenings to a halt, forced cafes and eateries to close or switch to cash transactions, and led to traffic disarray as streetlights blinked out. However, the Palais, the festival’s main hub, experienced minimal interruption thanks to backup generators. The scheduled press conference for Kelly Reichardt’s film, Mastermind, featuring the director and actors Josh O’Connor and Paul Mescal, took place at 10:15 local time as planned. Despite the blackout, the festival declared that tonight’s closing ceremony would proceed as scheduled because the Palais has its own power source.

The city of Cannes and nearby communities experienced a power outage, leaving approximately 160,000 homes without electricity, according to the French electricity grid manager, RTE, as stated on their official social media platform.

It’s believed that the power outage might be due to criminal activity. Recent news from French media indicates a fire, suspected arson, at an electricity station near Tanneron, southwest of Cannes, overnight. Additionally, electrical pylons were found down near Mougins, north of Cannes, and Villeneuve-Loubet and Cagnes-sur-Mer to the northeast. French radio network Franceinfo reported that local police and sources from the Interior Ministry suggested that the fallen pylons appeared to have been deliberately cut.

3:00 pm marked a partial restoration of the electricity, enabling traffic lights to function properly and some businesses to resume operations with limited power. The majority of hotels and apartments in the city have been reconnected as well, ensuring minimal disturbance for the high-profile attendees at tonight’s event.
