During a press gathering at Cannes on Monday, Anderson jokingly shared some tidbits about his latest project with his colleagues, keeping the specifics under wraps.

At a recent press conference during the Cannes Film Festival, Anderson and several of his prominent actors gathered in the press room for an interview about the “Phonecian Scheme”. Notable members of the ensemble included Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, Jeffrey Wright, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rupert Friend, and Ayoade. Bill Murray, a frequent collaborator of Anderson’s, was present in the audience, standing up and cheering when Anderson and the cast entered, inciting enthusiastic applause from the crowd.

Apart from other remarks, Anderson elicited laughter with a jest about U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal of movie tariffs. “I may not be an expert in this economic sector,” the director quipped, “but a 100% tariff? It sounds like he’ll take all the money, but then what do we get in return? Could movies be held up at customs? I don’t think that works that way. I want more details before I make an official comment.

On Sunday evening, Phoenician Scheme received a warm six-minute applause. According to THR‘s review, the movie is likened to a “Wes Anderson for those who’ve found themselves estranged by Wes Anderson.” The review further states that while the film may not win over its staunch critics, it might draw back in those who felt disconnected, suggesting: “The Phoenician Scheme signals a comeback for Anderson to the emotionally relatable and personal storylines that made his more approachable films (such as Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Moonrise Kingdom) so well-loved.

Focus releases it widely on June 6.
