Captain America: Brave New World Producer Explains Why a Major Character Was Cut Out

In the upcoming movie titled “Captain America: Brave New World,” Sam Wilson’s Cap is set to have a significant storyline. However, viewers anticipated seeing familiar faces from previous series, such as those introduced in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” Now, it has been confirmed that at least one significant Captain America character will not be featured in this film. Despite potential disappointment among some fans, the rationale behind their absence is actually logical.

In a conversation with Screen Rant, ex-Marvel executive Nate Moore shared the reason behind not including Eli Bradley in “Brave New World”. He stated that the creative team found the upcoming superhero movie was getting too congested, necessitating some edits. With at least three significant villains and a focus on charting Sam Wilson’s transition into Captain America, it was decided to simplify the storyline. Moore put it this way:

“The creative team realized that ‘Brave New World’ was becoming overly crowded, so we had to make some adjustments. With at least three major villains and a focus on Sam Wilson’s transformation into Captain America, we felt it was best to streamline the story.

Originally, Eli was part of the script, but as we progressed, we found it challenging to manage so many characters. To ensure each character had a purpose in the film, we decided to focus solely on Isaiah. This change allows us to delve into how Isaiah becomes entangled in Sam’s world and observe the impact this has on him. Additionally, we wanted to develop a strong relationship between Sam and Isaiah, without any external influences commenting on their interactions.

Instead of giving Eli a minor, undeveloped part, it seems wise for the filmmaker to focus on Isaiah Bradley’s storyline, which is said to be crucial in Brave New World. Overcrowded superhero films often falter under the burden of numerous characters, as demonstrated by examples like Spider-Man 3 and X-Men: The Last Stand.

For those not fully caught up, Eli Bradley, commonly known as Patriot to comic enthusiasts, is the grandson of Isaiah Bradley, who was dubbed the “First Black Captain America.” In the comics, Eli doesn’t begin with superpowers. Instead, he embarks on a journey to uphold his family’s legacy by using an unlawful Mutant Growth Hormone (MGH), a shortcut that temporarily grants him superhuman abilities, although it comes with risks. Over time, he demonstrates his heroism and joins forces with Wiccan, Hulkling, and other young heroes to create the Young Avengers. Since Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) is currently gathering the Young Avengers, with Kate Bishop and Joe Locke portraying Billy Maximoff, it’s plausible that Eli’s moment in the limelight is approaching—just not in “Brave New World.

It would have been wonderful if Eli Bradley had appeared in “Brave New World“. However, cramming him into an overcrowded film merely to tick a box wouldn’t do the character the justice he deserves. Marvel has been carefully building up the Young Avengers, and when Eli reappears, it should be in a project that lets him shine in his own right. For this reason, I understand and respect the producer’s decision.

Captain American: Brave New World hits the 2025 movie schedule on February 14.
