CAUTION: The upcoming article may reveal significant plot points from the 2025 film “Captain America: Brave New World“. If you haven’t watched it yet, I advise you to read with care to avoid getting upset about potential spoilers ruining your viewing experience.
It’s clear to me now that every new Marvel film seems to elicit either controversial or negative responses, given the response to “Captain America: Brave New World.” However, I am happy to admit that I’m part of a small group who finds Sam Wilson’s (Anthony Mackie) on-screen debut as Captain America a genuinely enjoyable, if somewhat overly political and cheesy, action thriller.
In agreement with their viewpoints, I can see why some critics, including Eric Eisenberg from TopMob in his Captain America: Brave New World review, have criticized the new superhero movie. Personally, I too had concerns about it, particularly the way the story handled two crucial characters. This might be related to the multiple reshoots and rewrites the film experienced. Despite these flaws, I’ve thought of some suggestions on how to manage these roles more effectively, which could have significantly enhanced this movie.
Giancarlo Esposito’s Sidewinder Should Have Been The Main Villain
As a movie critic, I’m convinced that no actor masters the art of villainy quite like Giancarlo Esposito. His multiple Emmy nods as Gus Fring in Breaking Bad, his bone-chilling role as Moff Gideon in the Star Wars saga, and numerous other performances attest to this fact. So, it leaves me utterly baffled why his portrayal of Sidewinder didn’t dominate Captain America: Brave New World, instead of making brief appearances in a few scenes that I believe are among the film’s most impactful.
Apparently, the reason is that the role of the Serpent Society leader was added to the story late in production after Samuel “The Leader” Sterns had already been established as the central antagonist. Honestly, if it were up to me (and with all due respect to Tim Blake Nelson), I would have used those reshoots as an opportunity to show less of Sterns and his laughable green makeup job and make Sam’s match with Sidewinder the main event. Esposito teased that we may see more of the terrorist leader in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I certainly hope so, as that would make up for his unjust lack of screen time.

We Should Have Seen More Of Red Hulk
Discussing an unjustified restricted screen time issue, let’s shift our focus towards Red Hulk. The gigantic, aggressive, irradiated persona of President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (portrayed by Harrison Ford) was a significant marketing attraction for the movie “Captain America: Brave New World“. In my opinion, this was a misstep because the transformation should have been unexpected, not hinted at beforehand. Despite earlier speculations regarding Red Hulk’s role, I believe the revelation would have been more impactful if it hadn’t been foreshadowed so heavily. Nevertheless, despite the gradual setup leading to Ross transforming throughout the narrative, witnessing it happen exclusively in the final act felt a bit rushed and added on.
At one point, it appeared as if Ross was on the verge of yielding to Sterns’ sway and releasing the Hulk onto a PT boat amidst the vast ocean, during a fierce air battle overhead. It would have been thrilling to witness the transformation unfold in such chaotic circumstances, leading to a bigger mess for Cap to manage and providing an opportunity for an epic showdown between Hulk and Red Hulk. I can only hope that we haven’t seen the last of Ford and, most importantly, Red Hulk within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Although I faced some problems with the film, including dialogue that felt quite forced, I find it hard to agree that Captain America: Brave New World is the worst Marvel movie so far, as some critics from The Rice Thresher have argued. There are other MCU films with poor reviews that I personally think are less enjoyable than this one. Nevertheless, I’m optimistic for improvement in one of my beloved franchises.
