Captain America: The Villain’s Wild Redesign After Reshoots

Warning: Spoilers for Captain America: Brave New World.

If you’re well-versed in the secret happenings surrounding the 2025 movie releases, particularly Captain America: Brave New World, you might have come across whispers that the film underwent significant reshoots after its initial release. Although reshoots are common in big-budget movies and upcoming Marvel productions, it’s said that around a third of the movie was modified during post-production. This means that we almost saw an entirely different version of Sam Wilson’s first solo adventure as Captain America. The alterations to the film’s primary antagonist are particularly evident, indicating a marked shift from the original plan.

If you’re seeking evidence of significant transformations, consider Tim Blake Nelson’s The Leader character from the film. Contrary to early rumors and pre-release merchandise, this character underwent a substantial change, as indicated by his final appearance in the movie. ComicBookMovie.com’s Josh Wildling emphasized these differences on X (formerly Twitter), showcasing that the Leader depicted in pre-release items such as Funko Pop figures and concept art bears no resemblance to his actual film appearance.

The comparison Wildling made is quite striking. Initially, the Funko Pop figure of Samuel Sterns, produced possibly before reshoots, embodies the traditional comic-book depiction with his signature green skin and enlarged skull. However, if you’ve watched Brave New World, you’re aware that the film version of The Leader appears drastically different. Instead of the elongated head and green skin fans anticipated, the movie presents him with a lumpy, almost mushroom-like head that resembles a shower cap. This change has led to discussions about the extent of Marvel’s post-production modifications and whether The Leader’s redesign was part of a broader change in the film’s creative direction.

Frankly speaking, I find the transformation a bit puzzling – to be honest, I believe the initial appearance was significantly better and more aligned with what devoted fans had anticipated. To put it another way, as Wildling pointed out in his post, it was spot on.

What I find most striking about #CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld is that the portrayal of The Leader, a character from the comics, is absent in the film. It seems they’ve made significant changes to his appearance during reshoots (unfortunately, these alterations didn’t improve his depiction).

Unfortunately, I concur with Wildling’s sentiments. The portrayal of The Leader in the recent superhero movie release fell short of our expectations. Whether it was a last-minute creative choice or due to the reported extensive reshoots as seen in Brave New World, one thing remains clear – this wasn’t the Samuel Sterns we were anticipating.

Prior to the reshoots of “Brave New World”, early set leaks provided a contrasting perspective on the Serpent Society. When the film was still going by its original title, “New World Order”, curious fans got a sneak peek at a villain lineup significantly different from what eventually appeared in the final version on the big screen.

One of the first big reveals came from on-set photos featuring WWE superstar Seth Rollins and Alita: Battle Angel actress Rosa Salazar decked out in full costume, seemingly as members of the infamous Serpent Society. But during the reported 22 days of reshoots, the film’s creative direction shifted hard, with the group being rebranded as a terrorist organization known simply as “Serpent.” Not only that, but Marvel Studios completely cut both Rollins and Salazar from the final cut. Instead, they brought in the legendary Giancarlo Esposito to play a new version of Sidewinder—a role previously rumored to be Rollins’ character.

It’s quite astonishing that, despite such significant modifications, the initial marketing for Brave New World still adhered to its original concept. In early 2024, McDonald’s Happy Meal toys showcased a figure of Salazar’s Diamondback character – a character who didn’t make it into the film. This has sparked fans on platform X (once known as Twitter) to uncover and share behind-the-scenes photos of Salazar sporting vibrant pink hair, which aligns perfectly with the discarded toy design.

The alterations to character cuts and Tim Blake Nelson’s Leader redesign are merely the surface-level changes in the buildup to Captain 4’s release; Marvel Studios also substantially revised Ruth Bat-Seraph’s character, better recognized as Sabra from the comics – an Israeli-born Jewish mutant. In the movie, they maintain her Israeli and Jewish roots, but drastically modify her origin story for the MCU. Rather than being a mutant, Sabra is presented as a former Black Widow, which makes her more similar to characters like Yelena Belova and Natasha Romanoff.

Regardless of its mixed reviews, “Brave New World” took the weekend box office crown. If you’re intrigued, you could go see it in theaters or simply wait for its release on Disney+ streaming service.
