As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in Stephen King’s terrifying worlds, the news of yet another adaptation of “Carrie” fills me with a mix of excitement and dread. Excitement because Mike Flanagan, known for his masterful handling of King’s works, is at the helm. Dread because I can’t help but wonder how many more ways Carrie White’s story can be reimagined without losing its raw power and emotional impact.
Stephen King‘s Carrie is getting another adaptation — this time in series form.
As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve got some exciting news about a drama in the making! It’s being developed by Amazon MGM Studios, based on King’s gripping novel from 1974. This story has already inspired four fantastic movies before. The talented Mike Flanagan, known for his work on Netflix’s The Haunting anthology and Doctor Sleep, is taking the reins to adapt this book. He’ll be joined by his partner Trevor Macy in executive production duties. Interestingly, they both have an ongoing deal with Amazon MGM Studios, which makes this project even more intriguing!
Should it go forward, Carrie would stream on Amazon’s Prime Video.
Flanagan has previously adapted several of Stephen King’s works, the latest being “The Life of Chuck,” which bagged the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. He is also responsible for penning the screenplays for “Doctor Sleep,” a sequel to “The Shining,” and “Gerald’s Game” (co-written with Jeff Howard). Flanagan and Macy hold rights to King’s “Dark Tower” book series as well.
Amazon MGM Studios refers to this project as a “vibrant and pertinent modernization” of the tale, focusing on Carrie White, a teenager who has lived in isolation due to her mother’s oppressive control. Following her father’s unexpected demise, Carrie enrolls in a public high school, becoming the target of bullying, all while uncovering her latent psychokinetic abilities.
Film director Brian De Palma is well-known for transforming Stephen King’s novel “Carrie” into a 1976 film starring Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie. Nearly two decades later, there was a sequel titled “The Rage: Carrie 2“. The book was also the inspiration for a TV movie on NBC in 2002 and another remake in 2013.
Apart from “Midnight Mass,” Flanagan has also worked on other TV projects such as “The Midnight Club,” a youth-centric series, and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” all airing on Netflix. In 2022, he transferred his multi-project agreement to Amazon MGM Studios.
Melinda Nishioka will oversee development of Carrie for Intrepid Pictures.
