‘Carrie’ Showrunner Mike Flanagan “Can’t Wait” for Viewers to See Summer Howell in Title Role

As a die-hard fan, I can share that Mike Flanagan, the mastermind behind Prime Video’s forthcoming “Carrie” series, delved into over a thousand audition tapes in search of the perfect lead actress. Eventually, he found his Carrie in none other than Summer Howell.

Flanagan shared that they examined approximately 1,800 potential candidates for that particular role during a thorough and lengthy selection process, at the premiere of his new movie ‘The Life of Chuck’, a project he worked on with Stephen King, the author of ‘Carrie’.

As a devoted fan, I’ve been captivated by the transformative performances that brought Carrie White to life on screen. Sissy Spacek masterfully portrayed her in the 1976 film based on Stephen King’s novel, while Chloe Grace Moretz took over for the 2013 remake. On television, Angela Bettis played Carrie in a 2002 movie adaptation, and Emily Bergl stepped into the role for the critically panned 1999 sequel, “The Rage: Carrie 2.”

Flanagan expressed his belief that Howell was perfect for the role. With credits like “Cult of Chucky” and Hallmark’s “Crashing Through the Snow”, her selection took some time. However, he is eager for audiences to witness her performance as it brings something unique and unprecedented to the part.

On Monday, Prime Video revealed that Samantha Sloyan, known for “The Pitt,” will be portraying Margaret White, Carrie’s overbearing mother, alongside Howell’s character. Notably, Sloyan has collaborated with Flanagan before, in the movie “Gerald’s Game” and various projects such as “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Midnight Club,” “Midnight Mass,” and “The Haunting of Hill House.

Carrie is joined by a stellar cast that includes Alison Thornton, Thalia Dudek, Siena Agudong, Amber Midthunder, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Joel Oulette, and Matthew Lillard.

Flanagan mentioned that what he provided was just a part of the list,” he said. “There are others ready to be revealed as well. Filming begins in two weeks, so I’m feeling both exhausted and eager to get started again.

Amazon’s Prime Video characterizes the series as a “daring and relevant reinvention” of King’s tale. It centers around a teenager who grapples with bullies while uncovering her latent psychic abilities.
