‘Carry-On’ Star Sofia Carson Weighs in on Netflix Hit’s Christmas Action Movie Status

As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours binge-watching action films and holiday movies alike, I must admit that Carry-On has managed to strike a perfect balance between these two genres, much like how my love for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches complements my obsession with popcorn during movie nights.

Ever since it premiered on Netflix on December 13, the action-packed thriller “Carry-On” has left quite an impression and for good reason. It’s a throwback to classic action films that keeps viewers glued to their screens with its nail-biting two hours of suspense. The fact that the movie is set on Christmas Eve has sparked discussions among viewers about whether it qualifies as a holiday film, a topic that’s been buzzing on social media. Now, one of the film’s actors has shared her take on this question.

Sofia Carson, star of Netflix’s popular series “Carry-On,” delved deep into various aspects of the show, even touching on whether she sees it as a holiday film. Remarkably, her response sparked renewed discussions about the classification of the 1988 action film “Die Hard” as a Christmas movie, a topic that has been debated for years.

You can make it whatever you prefer for yourself. Danielle Deadwyler said something truly insightful: ‘This is a Christmaction movie.’ From now on, that’s what I’ll call it too. However, many people adore Die Hard as their Christmas film, and I believe Christmas movies can cover various genres. One of these genres is action, and this is an action-themed Christmas movie.

As Carson, I slip into the character of Nora Parisi in “Carry-On,” the expectant partner of Ethan Kopek, played by Taron Egerton. This film has been a sensation among critics, garnering an impressive Certified Fresh rating of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, its audience score is somewhat lower at 58%. Nonetheless, this Jaume Collet-Serra production has held the top spot on Netflix for nearly a week now, suggesting that viewers are continually discovering – and falling for – this cinematic gem.

Sofia Carson Believes ‘Carry-On’ Combines the Best of Both Worlds

Similar to how Die Hard was set during Christmas, Carry-On also uses the holiday season as its backdrop. However, unlike the festive atmosphere you’d typically associate with Christmas Eve, this film is not about the joy and cheer. Instead, it’s an edge-of-your-seat action-thriller that follows a TSA officer who finds himself in a precarious situation – being blackmailed to allow a dangerous nerve agent onto a plane. Definitely not your typical holiday movie, is it?

Yet, the film carries an essence that resonates with the Christmas mood, merging action and holiday themes to create a piece infused with warmth beneath its excitement. For Carson, this unique blend appeals because these genres are cherished by many, and their fusion seems to bring everyone together.

“I actually think it brings together two really beloved and two really universal genres. Action movies, travel, the entire universe. It doesn’t matter what language you speak, what culture, what country you live in. Everyone loves an action thriller and everyone loves a holiday film because it’s just warm and comforting and brings us all together. So I think in bringing both of those genres together, you’re in essence bringing the world together.”

Although an official announcement hasn’t been made yet, given the massive success of “Carry-On,” it’s quite possible that a sequel could appear during the upcoming holiday season. For now, don’t miss your chance to watch it on Netflix, and take a look at our exclusive interview with Carson, in which she shares her experiences working on her debut action film.
