Casting the Unlikeliest Superhero Family

First Steps” is anticipated to be quite impressive. You might expect the primary difficulties for director Matt Shakman and his team to stem from special effects, action sequences, or substantial budgets. However, interestingly enough, the biggest challenge they’ve faced isn’t what you’d initially think.

The primary hurdle in the upcoming “Fantastic Four: First Steps” (2025) lies not in visual effects or set construction, but rather in a subtler aspect. Director Matt Shakman has emphasized to Entertainment Weekly that careful consideration will be given to casting choices for this film. It’s clear he’s seeking the perfect actors for each character, yet his focus extends beyond simply filling roles; there seems to be a deeper significance to his casting decisions.

Finding the right actors for the film proved to be our biggest hurdle. It wasn’t just about discovering the perfect Ben and Johnny, but also the ideal family members – a convincing married couple, siblings, and even an honorary uncle. It’s been incredibly rewarding to witness the strong bond and amazing chemistry that the four of them have developed since day one.

The Marvel films have showcased numerous teams, such as the Avengers who were like close work colleagues, and the Guardians of the Galaxy who grew close amidst turmoil and mutual hardships. Yet, the Fantastic Four stand out because they are more like a family than superheroes. Reed and Sue make up the married pair in this group, while Johnny is Sue’s affectionate younger brother and Ben serves as the strong foundation of their familial bond, symbolizing his unwavering allegiance to his teammates.

As a film enthusiast, I completely resonate with Matt Shakman’s dilemma during the casting process. Ensuring the right chemistry among the ensemble members is crucial to the success of a project. Finding an outstanding actor for Reed Richards was feasible, but what if that actor didn’t quite gel with the seemingly ideal candidate for his long-time buddy Ben? It’s these types of challenges that make me deeply respect and admire the craft of casting directors.

More on The Fantastic Four: First Steps

The Director of the Fantastic Four explained his choice for Galactus as the villain instead of Doctor Doom, and I find his reasoning quite compelling.

The Fantastic Four’s director defended his decision to select Galactus as the antagonist rather than Doctor Doom, and I agree with his perspective.

The talented cast of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” includes Pedro Pascal as the intelligent Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic, and Vanessa Kirby playing his supportive and ambitious wife, Susan Storm (Invisible Woman). Joseph Quinn steps into the role of Johnny Storm (Human Torch), while Ebon Moss-Bachrach takes on the part of Ben Grimm (The Thing). Marvel Studios has a strong history of selecting skilled actors, and I believe this movie will continue that trend.

While it’s crucial to focus on casting, it’s equally significant to consider the action sequences and visual effects. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige expressed his enthusiasm about the visual effects during an interview with TopMob, particularly emphasizing the need to get the Thing’s appearance right. After watching him in the First Steps teaser, I’m confident that other CGI characters in the movie will also look impressive.

In my initial thoughts about obstacles for First Steps, casting wasn’t necessarily front and center. However, I’m pleased to see that Matt Shakman seems to have put a great deal of thought into the casting process. The interactions among the main characters are crucial, as they greatly influence the overall dynamics. As Sue puts it in the trailer, “Regardless of what life throws at us, we’ll confront it together… as a family.
