Cate Blanchett and a Giant Brain Star in Trailer for Guy Maddin’s Horror-Comedy ‘Rumours’

As a cinephile who’s seen my fair share of films, from the classics to the avant-garde, I must say that the teaser trailer for Rumours has piqued my curiosity. The combination of political satire, horror, and surrealism is an intriguing mix, much like a fine wine with a spicy dish.

There’s a multitude of details to ponder over in the trailer for the movie named Rumours, starring Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander, and what appears to be an unusually large brain. The purpose behind this unusual inclusion isn’t immediately obvious.

On October 18th, Guy Maddin’s politically-charged horror-comedy movie, produced by Bleecker Street, will hit theaters. This release comes just before the U.S. presidential election in November. The film made its debut earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival and features an impressive cast including Roy Dupuis, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Charles Dance, Takehiro Hira, Denis Ménochet, Rolando Ravello, and Zlatko Buric.

The story revolves around the heads of state from the seven countries forming the G7, who find themselves misplaced in the forest during their yearly meeting, yet are tasked with penning a declaration to tackle a global emergency.

As a thrilled viewer, I must admit that the initial sneak peek of the movie doesn’t unveil much about its storyline, but it certainly sets an eerie atmosphere with the chilling mystery shrouded in the foggy woods. At one point, a character screams out something intriguing – “A giant brain!” – which has me even more eager to uncover the secrets that lie ahead.

Maddin was both writer and director for the movie, working alongside his long-term partners Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson. The production of this film is handled by Liz Jarvis, Philipp Kreuzer, and Lars Knudsen. Cate Blanchett and Ari Aster are credited as executive producers for the project.

In a review for The Hollywood Reporter, film critic Leslie Felperin stated that “Rumours” functions independently on a dreamlike, self-governing level, creating the laws of its world as it unfolds.

Felperin went on to say, “At times, it seems like a comedy sketch that precariously stays together until the creators and actors deliver a powerful final act, where all the cliches and overused phrases culminate in one passionate speech, shouted into the emptiness as the world goes up in flames.”
