CD Projekt Red Announces ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2’ at Anime Expo

CD Projekt Red is revisiting the world of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners with a fresh, independent game, a project they unveiled in conjunction with the showrunner of the anime series during a panel at Anime Expo last Friday.

Video game developer CD PROJEKT RED is teaming up with animation studio Trigger once more for the upcoming sequel to “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners,” titled “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2.” This series, like its original counterpart, will stream exclusively on Netflix. A logo and poster art were unveiled as part of CD PROJEKT RED’s behind-the-scenes event with the creators, hinting that Trigger would later showcase new episodes for the series at the Peacock Theater during their own panel, promising a sneak peek into the series.

The upcoming series, titled “Edgerunners 2,” will offer a self-contained, 10-episode narrative situated within the universe of “Cyberpunk 2077.” This thought-provoking story poses the question: in a city where violence reigns and spectacle blinds, what lengths would one take to ensure their tale is significant? Known as a gritty portrayal of redemption and vengeance, “Edgerunners 2” is expected to be more somber and brutal, as stated by the series’ writer and producer Bartosz Sztybor.

Night City holds many untold tales, and I yearn for more than what we’ve seen in ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.’ There are more narratives, more characters waiting to be brought to life, he mentioned when discussing his plans for another series. He felt that the sorrow expressed by the audience was not enough, and now he aims to make you feel even sadder.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Unveils a New Tale with Fresh Faces!

The sequel to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, will introduce a fresh narrative and novel characters. As of now, the series doesn’t have a confirmed release date; however, it is set to be helmed by Kai Ikarashi in the director’s chair. The original series’ director, Hiroyuki Imaishi, graced the panel to hand over the reins for Ikarashi’s directorial debut on this project, following their collaboration on the 2022 production. Voice actors Emi Lo (portraying Lucy Kushinada) and Zach Aguilar (as David Martinez) were also present at the panel, giving fans an exclusive look into the making of the 2022 anime from both cast and creatives.

Sztybor and Ikarashi will team up with lead character designer Kanno Ichigo and Masahiko Otsuka, who will handle the scriptwriting for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2.

In a statement, Sztybor expressed that although David Martinez’s story in “Cyberpunk: Edgerunner” has concluded, there are still many intriguing aspects to uncover within Night City. Moreover, the fact that the renowned animation studio Trigger will join us on this journey makes CD Projekt Red eager to present a gritty, authentic narrative of redemption and vengeance – something distinct from our previous works.
