In 2020, Ellen DeGeneres faced a storm of criticism concerning her long-running talk show. During the summer of that year, claims about a “toxic” work environment on the Ellen show started appearing, initially not directly implicating DeGeneres. However, allegations of on-set bullying eventually reached DeGeneres. This controversy has largely subsided, but now, Margaret Cho is expressing some unfavorable opinions about working with DeGeneres.
Margaret Cho has been active in comedy circles for quite some time and has encountered several well-known comedians during this period. On The Kelly Mantle Show, which can be found on YouTube, Cho was asked about her opinions on various comedians. When Ellen DeGeneres was mentioned, Cho stated that they had known each other for a “long time” and referred to her as “a bit of a bully.” It appears the strained relationship between them has persisted over the years.
Throughout most of my professional journey, Ellen was uncharacteristically odd and uncourteous towards me. In the 1980s, I had the honor to serve as her opening act in comedy clubs, and later, during the 2000s when I would appear on her talk show, she seemed to treat me like a stranger. It’s as if I said, ‘Really?’ Such behavior was strange and unsettling, especially considering our long history together. It’s downright peculiar and creepy.
For several years, whispers about Ellen DeGeneres’ behavior have circulated widely on social media. Early celebrities like Lea Thompson, Brad Garrett, and Ryan Phillippe were among those who validated these claims. More recently, Ali Fedotowsky-Manno from The Bachelorette asserted that she felt belittled during her appearance on Ellen’s show. Comedian Margaret Cho also shared a past incident involving David Bowie’s guest appearance on DeGeneres’ program, where Bowie had praised Cho only for DeGeneres to downplay his compliments afterwards.
Additionally, let me share an incident: David Bowie had been a guest on the show previously, and I had made quite an impression on him the night before by wearing an extravagant Chinese emperor costume at his concert. He spoke highly of my outfit and mentioned it extensively, but unfortunately, the host decided to omit this part from the broadcast. This left me upset, as I was informed about it by the producer, a close friend of mine, who apologetically explained that the host had removed it. However, Bowie continued to praise my outfit, saying something along the lines of “God said your name,” which I found incredibly rude! Whether it was due to personal reasons or time constraints, I cannot help but take it personally since I chose to do so.
Ellen DeGeneres herself has not provided any kind of comment on her reasoning for cutting that part of David Bowie’s interview, as of this writing. Although DeGeneres faced blowback from multiple people, she was publicly defended by her brother, Vance, music producer Scooter Braun and a few others. When the toxic work environment rumors initially surfaced, DeGeneres said she was committed to spearheading “change” behind the scenes.
Eventually, following a period of controversy, news broke out that Ellen would be wrapping up her show by the end of the 2021-2022 TV season. Later on, Ellen addressed the criticism she received, stating it felt “too organized” and “too synchronized.” In May 2022, the longtime stand-up comedian bid farewell to her show for good.
Currently, Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi reside in the United Kingdom, instead of the United States. Recently, Ellen has been maintaining a low profile. It’s unclear if remarks from Margaret Cho or Ali Fedotowsky-Manno will provoke additional controversy towards DeGeneres.
