Celine has officially revealed that Michael Rider, their new creative director, will make his runway debut on July 6. It’s unclear at this time whether his first collection, which will be presented during the Fall/Winter 2025 Haute Couture season, will focus on women’s wear, men’s wear, or a blend of both.
The individual who was recently hired back in October, replacing Hedi Slimane after his sudden exit, had actually worked for this brand for ten years during Phoebe Philo’s influential creative reign. He left in 2018 to assume the role of Creative Director at Ralph Lauren, a position he held until May 2024.
In the high-fashion world, the executive and design ranks have undergone a flurry of unexpected changes recently, with the arrival of Slimane on the scene being just one example. His last collection for Celine, unveiled via YouTube during the Spring/Summer 2025 season, was widely interpreted as an attempt to secure his position at Chanel, following Virginie Viard’s departure and the chatter in the industry. However, neither Matthieu Blazy’s appointment at Chanel nor any announcement about Slimane’s future plans have been confirmed yet.
In the near future, Celine will partially re-enter the traditional fashion week itinerary with a new runway show. Under Slimane’s guidance, the brand has chosen to present off-schedule pre-recorded runways in unique locations rather than participating in standard events. Slimane’s tenure at Celine is characterized by his signature blend of preppy and grunge styles and a keen interest in the younger generations, including popular TikTok creators.
The first collection by the new designer may mark a stylistic shift away from what Celine’s regular shoppers typically expect, much like how Gucci changed directions when Alessandro Michele passed the reigns to Sabato De Sarno.
