On Tuesday evening during the Eurovision Song Contest semifinals held in Switzerland, the renowned pop sensation Celine Dion unexpectedly appeared in a video message.
Dion made an appearance at the St. Jakobshalle arena in Basel through a previously recorded video message, as she continues to fight against the uncommon neurological disorder called Stiff Person Syndrome.
Hello, Eurovision family and competitors! I wish more than anything I could join you in Basel today. Switzerland continues to hold a dear place in my heart, as it was there that I was given the opportunity to be part of something truly exceptional 37 years ago after winning the Eurovision Song Contest for Switzerland.” (Dion)
The Canadian singer called her Eurovision victory a “significant turning point” in her life, as her video message was displayed on the rear stage of the Basel arena. “Thirty-seven years have passed since Switzerland last won and hosted this amazing event,” she remarked. “To the people of Switzerland, I express my gratitude for your affection. This night belongs to you, and I hope you feel as proud as I do,” Dion expressed.
In a beautiful expression of French, she said: “Music binds us, not just tonight or at this moment. Marvelous! It’s our strength, our comfort, and our solace in times when we need it most. I adore you all, Europe and the world beyond. Affectionately, I love you.
Following her speech, I found myself on stage alongside four other contestants from the 2024 Eurovision Contest – Jerry Heil, iolanda, Marina Satti, and Silvester Belt. We took turns to serenade the audience with a beautiful rendition of Celine Dion’s iconic hit, “Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi,” which she won back in 1988. What an unforgettable experience!
After being diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome and canceling all her concert performances two years prior, Dion made a rare return to the stage during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics. This performance marked her second time performing at the Olympic Games, having sung “The Power of the Dream” in Atlanta back in 1996.
As a gamer, I’d put it this way: “I’ve been diagnosed with a weird autoimmune issue called Stiff Person Syndrome, which affects my nervous system. This means I experience progressive muscle rigidity and spasms, particularly in my lower body and back. Unfortunately, there’s no cure for it yet.
