Celine Song on How ‘Materialists’ Subverts the Rom-Com With a “Really Frank Conversation”

As a devoted admirer, I must say that Celine Song’s “Materialists” might initially appear as a quintessential rom-com with its bubbly previews playing to the tune of “Material Girl” and a nostalgic voiceover. But, the creators behind this production hint at a deeper layer of drama that deviates from the usual cheerful trajectory often associated with this genre.

To be quite honest, as I eagerly awaited the premiere, I found myself agreeing with Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans. They were spot on when they described the movie as a blend of romance, comedy, and drama – a true “rom-com-dram” experience that had me hooked.

Evans stated to The Hollywood Reporter during the recent premiere of Materialists in New York, ‘It has elements of romance and comedy, but it’s more like a romantic-comedy with a touch of drama.’

Moreover, Song aimed to honor romantic comedies created by esteemed directors such as Nora Ephron and James L. Brooks.

The filmmaker expressed that they find a deep inspiration from romantic comedies, as they believe this genre provides a captivating platform to discuss and express love, relationships, and our shared concerns. They view it as a fantastic chance to explore love themes in a manner similar to Nora Ephron or James L. Brooks, but tailored for the audience of 2025.

However, she advises film viewers to brace themselves for an element they may not commonly encounter in similar movies.

In my opinion, the film might include candid discussions that some might find blunt or impolite in a digital setting, but they represent the honest conversations we have with our dearest friends. This is what I believe viewers will witness on screen.” (60 characters)

Marin Ireland, who portrays Johnson’s supervisor on screen, shares that the A24 movie presents a more authentic turn of events compared to typical romantic comedies.

Ireland suggested that if you’ve watched romantic comedies before, you may believe you already know how the movie will unfold once some essential conditions are met. However, he added, the story often takes an unexpected turn towards reality rather than sticking to the typical rom-com plotline.

In real life, matchmaker Patti Stanger went to the premiere of the movie titled “Materialists” and commended the film for how it portrayed her line of work.

Dakota Johnson’s character shows a remarkable level of care. Her superior was exceptional at maintaining harmony. She cared deeply for her clients above all others, a quality I would value if she were applying for a job tomorrow. In my opinion, she is one of the finest matchmakers I’ve encountered. I’m glad Celine created such a character, as there are indeed professionals like her in our field. We prioritize your happiness above all else and won’t rest until you’re satisfied.

And Stanger thinks rom-coms have turned more realistic to reflect the times.

As a fan, I’ve noticed a shift in the romantic comedies we’re watching – they’ve taken on a more somber tone, reflecting the serious times we find ourselves in. We’re all confined at home, regardless of age. While we’re binge-watching shows like Love Island, it’s clear we’re not living those romantic moments ourselves. I believe men – and I don’t mean to point fingers – men, we need you to take the lead. We yearn for the old-school charm, the unexpected encounters at bars, restaurants, or even gas stations. This isn’t a time when we shy away from interaction. On the contrary, we crave conversation. We feel empowered and independent, but we still want men to be men – confident, masculine figures who aren’t afraid to step up.

Materialists is currently in theaters.
