The popularity of HBO’s series, titled “Celtics City“, is steadily climbing on streaming charts as basketball enthusiasts, especially Celtics fans, tune in to watch their games. According to the streaming service, this nine-part sports documentary series has been earning praise from viewers across the globe. Produced by Bill Simmons, a renowned American sports analyst and author, and Connor Schell, “Celtics City” chronicles the story of the Boston Celtics, one of the NBA’s most legendary franchises. It delves into the team’s origins, their initial inclusion in the league, their historic championships, and the intense rivalries that have molded their unique identity. The series “Celtics City” debuted on Max on March 3, 2025. Despite just starting to stream, it’s already garnered a flawless Rotten Tomatoes score. Alan French from Sunshine State Cineplex described it as an enjoyable journey with thought-provoking conversations. Scott Hines from Decider admitted, despite being a Celtics rival, he had to acknowledge that the series is excellent. John Anderson of the Wall Street Journal summed up by saying, “Celtics City” never slows down. It has to keep going. As Oscar Wilde once said, if you judge a team by its rivals, “Celtics City,” even with nine episodes, might not be long enough to include all of them.

The first installment began with a respectful salute to the franchise clinching its 18th title. It subsequently delved into the initial chapter exploring the groundbreaking drafting of Chuck Cooper, marking him as the NBA’s inaugural Black player. Flashing back to 1950, when Red Auerbach aimed to transform the Celtics into a powerful dynasty, this premiere episode established the series’ subsequent themes. During that era, the team was spearheaded by Bob Cousy and Bill Russell, who ruled the court. Cousy accumulated six championships, while Russell secured 11.

In the second episode that aired on March 10, 2025, we dive into the story of the Civil Rights Movement’s emergence and the racial struggles faced by Bill Russell during his time in Boston while playing for the team. Despite ongoing threats to his life, Russell and the squad persevered, making significant strides. Remarkably, Russell became the league’s first Black head coach, taking over from Auerbach. The series, Celtics City, offers viewers a unique glimpse into the lives of Celtics legends, such as Hall of Famers Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Bob Cousy, Jerry West, Doc Rivers, Kendrick Perkins, Ray Allen, Rajon Rondo, and others.
