Chad Michael Murray on Why He Considered Quitting Acting After ‘One Tree Hill’ Exit

In a recent interview published on Wednesday, the actor from “Merry Gentlemen” discussed the intense fandom he encountered after his seven-season run on “One Tree Hill”, as well as roles in films like “A Cinderella Story” and “Freaky Friday”. During that time, Murray found himself both embracing stardom and struggling to handle it while still growing up, a situation that at times felt overwhelming.

At one point, he admitted feeling like giving up. He was exhausted and couldn’t continue any longer. This was shortly after his departure from ‘One Tree Hill,’ and it wasn’t due to the fanbase. Instead, it was because during your late teens to early twenties, which are crucial years for life lessons and brain development, mistakes happen more frequently. We all still mess up as adults, but I find it hard to look past those errors when you’re not mature enough to comprehend the situations you’re in at that time.

He recalled it being “hard” for him given “there are so many eyeballs on you. And you go to the grocery store and someone points at you, ‘Oh, that’s the guy that’s on the tabloid, or that’s the guy that did this.’ Even if they’re not talking about that, sometimes your head goes to a negative place, and I know mine really did. And so I just made a big pivot at that point in my life and said, ‘You know what? This is not what I want.’”

Reflecting on the past, Murray admitted he “underestimated the force that the field holds, the reverence it deserves, and the importance of treating everyone and every situation with respect.” He went on to say that he spent a considerable amount of time reevaluating his perspective. Currently, Murray still cherishes the nostalgia of his previous projects. During filming for Netflix’s “The Merry Gentlemen,” he returned home to find his family watching “A Cinderella Story.” He recalled them saying, “Look, there’s Dad, little Chad!” However, Murray humorously noted that it’s strange because his 9-year-old son is about the same age as Austin Ames was then. He also found it odd to see such a strong resemblance between his son and himself. “It sounds crazy, but I’m experiencing these things,” he said.

Regarding another one of his teenage successes, Murray expresses eagerness to “secretly peek into a cinema and observe audience responses” towards Freakier Friday, where he once again plays Jake alongside Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis in the follow-up to the 2003 movie.

Murray likened returning to set with everyone to a high school reunion. He elaborated, “Twenty-two or twenty-three years have passed, yet the team remains exceptional. Our director, Nisha [Ganatra], was brimming with energy, and our new cast members were fantastic. Then there’s Jamie, who continues to embody professionalism, grace, and leadership. And let’s not forget the incredible talent that is Lindsay Lohan.

Regarding the rumored sequel series of “One Tree Hill,” Murray has shared that he isn’t planning to participate at the moment. In a conversation with the Los Angeles Times, Murray expressed that he and his “One Tree Hill” co-star James Lafferty aren’t involved because no one has contacted them about it yet, so they’re not participating.
