Chanel remains interested in Bangkok, Thailand as a key area for their experiential events, such as the immersive art installations they’ve been creating. After the successful Summer Tour experience, they’ve come back with another engaging piece. Collaborating with renowned Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Chanel presented “A Conversation with the Sun” (VR) at the 7th Bangkok Experimental Film Festival (BEFF7). This event took place on January 24 at One Bangkok Forum and marked the first time Weerasethakul’s augmented and virtual reality performance was shown in Bangkok.
Apichatpong’s immersive artwork merges dreams with reality, delving into topics of light, recollections, and life’s cycles. This captivating installation is augmented by Ryuichi Sakamoto’s emotionally resonant soundtracks and Katsuya Taniguchi’s digital artistry, which breathes life into a dynamic interplay of shadows, motion, and virtual environments. Previously displayed at the Thailand Biennale in Chiang Rai, this presentation in Bangkok underscores Chanel’s commitment to modern art and cultural dialogue.
To mark the exhibition, Chanel organized an exclusive gathering at Bangkok Kunsthalle, assembling its brand ambassadors such as Tilda Swinton and Thai actress Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying, alongside collaborators of Apichatpong. This event acknowledged his significant impact on experimental cinema and the artistic community influencing both Thai and international film culture.
On January 25th, the festivities persisted with the presentation titled “An Encounter: The Last Thing You Saw That Felt Like a Movie“. This was a twofold event, comprising of a live act by Swinton and an intimate dialogue between the actress and Apichatpong, overseen by Kong Rithdee.
Chanel’s backing for BEFF7 demonstrates their continuous dedication to cinematic evolution, encouraging creative ingenuity, and advocating for filmmakers who challenge conventional narratives in storytelling.
Chanel’s involvement with BEFF7 showcases their persistent efforts in advancing cinema, nurturing innovative artistry, and championing filmmakers who stretch the limits of narrative construction.
