To refresh your memory, let’s revisit the unexpected plot point at hand.

WARNING. This article contains SPOILERS for Blink Twice beyond this point.

What Happens In Blink Twice’s Twist Ending

Naomi Ackie’s character, Frida, encounters Channing Tatum’s persona, Slater King – a tech magnate attempting to rebuild his reputation after a public scandal involving cultural insensitivity. Believing it to be an opportunity of a lifetime, the financially strapped Frida accepts his invitation to join him and his questionable companions for a getaway on his private island. Throughout the day, they indulge in endless champagne, marijuana, and lounge by the pool. Evenings are spent enjoying extravagant dinners, experimenting with hallucinogens, and dancing wildly in the garden. However, as night falls, darker activities begin to unfold.

In the third act, it’s revealed that the women and a young man, referred to as their “resident prodigy,” are victims of distressing incidents of sexual violence. However, they appear to have no recollection of these harrowing experiences by the next day due to a drug called Slater King, which he has been distributing. This drug suppresses traumatic memories. Interestingly, Frida stumbles upon an old collection of photographs, including ones of herself, and realizes she had previously visited the island but had completely erased that memory. Even Slater King, the central character, is seen using this drug frequently throughout the movie to obliterate his own traumatic past.

It’s becoming clearer why the movie was named “Pussy Island” in the first place. After finding the antidote (snake venom), Frida sets fire to the island and seizes control of Slater King’s domain, but let’s not dwell on that detail…

What The Alternate Version Of The Twist Was

When Frida discovers the picture, it’s evident that she visited the island at least on one occasion. The exact number of their meetings isn’t specified, but in a tense scene near the end of the movie, Slater King (played by Channing Tatum) refers to her as his “dearest friend.” Originally, the script clearly indicated that she had been to the island multiple times, but this detail was subtly implied rather than explicitly stated, as Channing Tatum clarified, to avoid creating plot inconsistencies.

Based on my personal experiences, I find it essential to clarify complex ideas and avoid unnecessary ambiguity in communication. In my past, I have encountered situations where a simple explanation would have been more effective than convoluted language. The phrase “We played with a lot of different other versions” could easily be paraphrased as “We experimented with numerous variations.” The sentence “At one point she had been there multiple, multiple times, not just one other time or whatever” can be simplified to “She visited that place many times, not just once.” Lastly, “It was a little confusing and esoteric to draw out what that really would mean and justify it. So I think simplifying it was better” could become “I found the previous statement a bit confusing, so I decided to make it clearer and more straightforward.” Simplification not only enhances clarity but also makes the message more accessible to a wider audience.

It’s quite logical, isn’t it? Of course, one might question why Frida kept traveling frequently if her close friend Jess wasn’t aware of her destinations. Given their long-standing relationship, it would be challenging for viewers to follow the narrative without understanding this aspect.

How Blink Twice’s Stars Approached Playing The Twist

Imagine working on a whole movie with a hidden truth, one that remains unknown to the viewers. Now, consider this secret is something deeply unsettling, a level of disturbance rarely seen in films. For the character portrayed by Channing Tatum, who plays the villain, the task seems almost straightforward. As he himself described it:

Knowing [the twist] is a weird thing to have to play. Poker faces is always the best face, I guess.

For Naomi Ackie, the role presents a complex challenge. While viewers follow the storyline through Frida’s perspective, Naomi Ackie already knows the ending because she has read the script. To portray the intrigue and suspense convincingly, she adopts a method reminiscent of Shakespearean acting, as she shared:

I recently acted out the events that unfolded, similar to how a character in a Shakespearean tragedy doesn’t enact the tragedy itself but rather the moments leading up to it. The idea is to portray the prelude, keeping the main event hidden from view. Does that make sense?

In simpler terms, Channing Tatum acknowledged Naomi Ackie’s impressive knowledge of Shakespeare during an interview, and she humbly referred to herself as a “thespian.” This charming exchange is detailed in the article’s beginning, and you can watch the entire interview, including Zoë Kravitz herself, on our YouTube channel.
