Fans were thrilled when it was announced that Channing Tatum would be part of Avengers: Doomsday, having previously impressed as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine. Now, despite keeping his role a secret, Tatum has raised eyebrows by expressing the need to stay fit for the upcoming Marvel film. Frankly, I can understand why he feels that way.
The 44-year-old actor recently spoke with ET, which went looking for details about Avengers: Doomsday. Tatum played coy, not even fully admitting he’d be in the film, just claiming he’d have a chair to watch the production. When it was pointed out that he’s been staying in “Marvel shape,” Tatum questioned why that’s even a thing, saying…
It’s amusing that Marvel characters have superpowers, isn’t it? For instance, why must they all have six-pack abs? I often wonder if I could speak to these creators. I’d ask, ‘hey, you can control the elements or turn invisible, but why do I need to be toned? Why can’t I enjoy a bag of Cheetos and still possess the power to demolish buildings?’ Isn’t it strange that physical appearance seems so tied to their abilities in these stories?
The man makes a valid observation. Although maintaining physical fitness might be crucial for certain superheroes, it’s not necessarily true for characters like Gambit. His unique power of explosive manipulation doesn’t rely on his physique.
Or:
The man is correct in his assessment. Superheroes who require peak physical condition might include, but not everyone shares the same needs. In terms of Gambit, his skillset involving explosion control doesn’t hinge on his physical form.
Marvel has playfully explored this concept, introducing “Chubby Thor” in the movie Avengers: Endgame. In the storyline, the Asgardian deity intentionally gained weight but was still potent enough to confront Thanos at the film’s climax. It could be intriguing to witness more superheroes who choose not to prioritize gym workouts.
As a dedicated admirer, I ponder over the latest Marvel blockbuster, “Thor: Love and Thunder.” Despite being the God of Thunder, it appears Thor had to regain his physique for the film. The question arises, was this really necessary for him? After all, when you’re a literal deity, shouldn’t fighting supervillains not leave you winded, regardless of your physical condition?
Captain America, too, boasts an impressive physique, but it’s due to the Super Soldier Serum. Yet, the films show Steve Rogers putting in time at the gym. Did he truly need to do that?

Given that Channing Tatum’s portrayal of Gambit in Avengers: Doomsday could possibly differ from the Gambit we knew in Deadpool & Wolverine, it’s conceivable that this new characterization may not be exactly the same. Perhaps, this iteration of Gambit has a fondness for Cheetos.
Approaching the one-year mark until the release of “Avengers: Doomsday,” fans eagerly anticipate the return of Channing Tatum to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s likely that he will be in peak physical condition for his role, but we can only hope that following the filming, he’ll have plenty of time to relax on the couch and unwind.
